Rode NT2a vs Rode NTK

Howdy,

I have a NT2a microphone and I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to A/B the NT2a with the NTK microphone and what were their results in doing so?

I am looking to get a tube microphone and I like the Rode mics (I have about 5 or 6) - is the "tube sound" something I would notice right away vs my solid state microphone assuming my preamp and monitors are good (which they are)?

My main preamp at the moment is Joe Meek Twin Q which is not a tube mic pre but a very clean, good quality pre indeed.

I have two NT2-a's and I love them. Very versatile. I know Rodes are generally not liked because sometimes they are 'harsh' but I've never had harshness issues. In fact, when using them as drum OH's, I have to bump up the high end EQ.

I have read that their tube mics are harsher, especially the NTK. Ususally replacing the stock tube will help a ton. I would recommend spending a few extra dollars and getting the K2, its not much more. Or if you want to break bank, churn out the $1000+ and get the Rode Classic II (I think that's what its called). Never heard a negative review on that.

Basically, I've heard enough negative things about the NTK to just get the K2 instead and switch the tube out.

I have never tried them though, so this is just what I've read/heard.
 
If you can find a used NTV in good condition it is a very nice mic too. A bit darker than the NT-2. The power supply features a Jenson transformer.
