between the nt1 and nt1a whats the difference??
is one noticably better?

It's a difficult question to answer, because there have been several iterations of the NT1 over the years. The earliest NT1 (SN <25,000) is speculated to be possibly the best version because the mics were all assembled in Australia under strict quality control (though the capsules were always made in China, I believe). After that, Rode started outsourcing more manufacturing to China and the quality was variable. The NT1A, which has lower self-noise (good) than the NT1, is also reputedly more harsh sounding (bad) in the high frequencies (again, quality is variable). Now, Rode claims that they have moved all their operations back to Australia so, potentially, quality may be better now. I own an NT1 and find it to be a decent condenser for pop vocals that need a little "sheen" due to its frequency curve.

would you take a rode nt1 or an at3035 for recording mostly rap/hiphop vocals?

The noticeable difference about both of those mics is that nether is as good as some of the better mics in that same price range.

the original NT1s were made from capsules stripped from some other mic that was built in china, and then put in an australian-built body.
SN 25,000+ were made with a chineese-made version of thier own captuse (HM1 or something like that) in the Aussie body.
The NT1-A is their new version, with all new circuitry, and an austrlian-built capsule. All of Rode's mices are now wholly australian built.

I don't mind their mics, however I find the NT1-A a bit boring, it's their budget LDC, and it doesn't really show off thier good side. I have a NT2000 that I don't think I'll ever part with, and a NT-4 that has come in handy in so many situations that I could never list them all.

Best way to find out, though, is to go out and test them at a music store (although you'll be hard pressed to find an NT1 in a store, I don't think they've been manufactured fora few years now).

I'm a big fan of the Rode mic range. (OK, I'm an Aussie so I'm probably biased :D )

I also have an NT2000 I bought after reading heaps of reviews (rarely buy anything these days without hearing what other people think about it first) and it is one beautiful sounding mic. Much smoother than the NT1-a, but not as 'crisp' as the NTV.

I agree that the NT1-a doesn't show off the quality of the Rode range very well, but what do you expect for under $Aus400? Its a BUDGET microphone after all :)

Mind you, I have had a chance to try out a Neumann TLM103 and this is a very, very nice mic indeed. The rear rejection seems to be much better than that of the Rode mics. Now if only I could justify the extra $$$$
