Hi,

I'm setting my first home studio, but after following Focusrite's videos and Ableton Live 9 Lite / Adobe Audition instructions I can't record anything.

My setup is
Rode NT1 -> Focusrite Clarett 2pre -> thunderbolt -> OSx El capitan

I don't have monitor speakers connected. First question, is it needed?

I'm able to open Focusrite Control Panel, and I can activate/deactivate air mode, so I think FC is properly connected and in communication with Clarett 2pre

I’m attaching some screenshots of the above.

I need to get another cable and microphone to test if the Clarett is providing Phantom power or not, but it might take me an extra day, if the second mic works then it might be either the cable or the NT1 the one with the issue, is this logic correct? Am I missing any configuration on FC or Daws (Audition, Live)? or any configuration in the computer?

Thanks a lot for reading or any advice.

I know nothing of macs nor such esoteric gear but you don't need "another lead" to test for phantom power!
ALL you need is a $20 Digital Multi Meter...EVERYONE who touches/owns/thinks about ANYTHING electrical should get one ESPECIALLY (WTGR!) a well heeled music person!

Just pop the DMM's probes into pin 1 and pin 2 then 1 and 3 of the mic end of the XLR and you should read 48volts + or - 4V .
Ok, this will not test the spook juice consumption of the mic (you WOULD need a breakout cable for that) but it is very unlikely for the Rode to be borked nor the F'rite TBH.

Yes, you will need monitors very soon, Opinions vary greatly (to put it mildly!) here on how well you can mix on headphones but ultimately there is pretty universal agreement that you need good monitors in a well treated room to do a good job.

Dave.

Thank you again Dave, the cable was bad, not the interface or the mic as you pointed out. I also had to modify FC settings, as per focusrite's support answer:

I can see in your screenshots for the Focusrite Control > Device Settings, that the Sync Source for the unit is set to ADAT, and the Sync Status is Not Locked. This would cause the unit to not be able to pass audio.

Can you please switch this to Clock Source Internal? This should give you a Sync Status Locked.

So now is working.
