I've got a Rode NT1-A now... my 1st condenser mic for home recording. I used a friends C1000S & loved it... Just wondered how you folks would compare the two & what each would be best suited for? I'm mainly recording acoustic guitar & vocals but may occasionally mic a bass guitar amp.

thanks for any info...

If you like the way either of these mics sound on your sources then that's all that really matters.

Essentially, the NT1a is a large-diaphragm mic and the C1000 is a small-diaphragm. For real explanations of this, see the big polar patterns thread, but essentially, small-diaphragms have better transient response (because the diaphragm is smaller therefore lighter therefore less inertia therefore responds faster to transients), and so are often favoured for percussion (eg drum overheads) and acoustic guitar/strings. Large diaphragms tend to be favoured for vocals as they often sound more flattering (ie less accurate but in a pleasing way).

BTW, if you're interested in a much more well-regarded mic than the C1000 for a lot less money, see the "MXL 603 for $49" thread. I have a pair of these and love'em

The Rode NT1 mic is by far the most amazing example of killer gear being relatively cheap. I paid $200 for mine, and it was the best money I've ever spent on gear.

To my ears, the NT-1 sounded as good as the Neumann U-87. I tested them both before buying. Of course, to a lot of people, a Toyota drives as good as a Mercedes.

I say if cheap is your goal, then you can't possibly go wrong with the NT-1 I use mine with a Presonus BlueTube pre, and I've achieved fantastic results.

I agree with the MXL 603 suggestion. They are selling for $49 right now at Shreve Audio. You could buy 4 of them for what the C1000s costs and with just two you can do so much more than with that C1000s.

Blessings, Terry
