Hi all,

I'm on a pretty limited budget, can afford 1 mic.
I have the impression that the Rode NT1-A is a good choice for several purposes.

I'd like to record vocals, acoustic guitar, but I also want to place it in fornt of my amp (mesa boogie dc-5). The first two points are generally positively reviewed in reviews, but is it a good choice to also use the NT1-A for recording electric guitar?

Thanks a lot for your reaction.

Might be a bit harsh in the highs but nothing that couldn't be handled. BTW good amp, I have a dc-3.

Ive never been much on a LDC as the sole mic on a guitar amp. For a little extra cash ($50- $70) you can get a decent dynamic for that purpose.

It's a mic right? It'll work, it wouldn't be my first choice but it'll work

Fotr your Mesa, a Shure SM57 works great and you should be able to find one used for about $50

I had the NT1000 for a while and it sounded very harsh to my ears... passed it over. Dunno about the NT1A though.

I had an nt1-a at one point but found that it was not good on a wide enough array of sources. It had an incredubly low noise floor and was fantastic for spying on the neighbors. Its high end was a too sharp for a lot of things though. I sold it and got a pair of m179's which ended up being much better dum-dum all-around mics. Kinda like the condenser version of an sm57. May not be right for everything, but really sounds terrible on nothing, which cant be said of the nt1-a.

I've seen it done a few times, sounds decent. Great all around mic.
