Okay, I'm seeing that the RODE NT1-A Anniversary Model is now for sale on Musicians Friend and ZZounds for $200. I've been using the Studio Projects B1 and have been fairly happy with it. Am I going to love this RODE, or shouldn't I waist my money?

Thanks!

I have an older Rode NT1 and a Studio Projects B1... and they sound different... the Rode is brighter sounding. I like them both. However, I have no frickin idea if you'll love or even like it, and NO one on this BBS knows either. Just try the Rode and decide for yourself if YOU love it or not.

PS... there are some people here that are so sick and tired of XXX VS. YYY type mic threads that they don't even read them anymore.

and yet we keep commin back!

if you love treble get the rode. that is a bright mic!

i dunno about the new edition, but the old one sort of looks chinsy and feels chinsy as well.

DLJ: You're one angy dude.........you're funny.

EELDIP: Thanks for the advice. I've got a Shure SM58 That I find rather bright. It's not a condensor, but it colors the stuff a lot compared to the B1. I was under the impression that this Rode is kind of a popular vocal mic.

well, a lot of people like bright vocals. it is just about the most common vocal sound goin' around these days.

i guess it is nice cause you can send the voice back into the mix a bit and still hear the words... and it sounds sort of breathy and intimate, which can be nice.

i think the b1 and some eq'ed "air" will give you a pretty good vocal sound. maybe a bit spitty... i dunno. just a guess. i wouldnt go crazy over the NT1s. they are just about the same as the chinese ones that are about half the price (studio projects for example).

i had an NT1 and traded it away pretty quickly. i couldnt find much use for it beyond vocals and sometimes guitar.

I've got the original NT-1, and a pair of SP B1's, and I'll agree with DJL, the NT-1 is a bit brighter that the B1 on top; the mid and bottow are quite similar IMHO. The NT-1 isn't nearly as harsh and fizzy on the high end compared to the C-1000/2000/3000 AKGs or the MXLs or Behringer LDCs. If you want a "darker" sounding low cost LDC, try out the Octava 319, but be careful; they're very inconsistent and are somewhat poorly made.

Robert, what are all the applications you'd be planning to use the new microphone on?
Also, what style of music?

Chris

If you're looking for a little brighter top end, but like the B1, why not try the C1. Its about the same or less than the Rode and a very nice mic.

This is one of the best replies I've ever seen in the 'mic forum'

the sm58 is a fairly dark mic, i'm thinking it might be your preamp.

Thanks people

EELDIP: Thanks...I'll keep that in mind. I'm starting to lean away from that mic the more I hear.

KIDKLASH: Thanks as well, I guess I understand "bright", but I'm assuming "dark" is kind of the opposite. a lot of low end with out much high end (?)...is that right?

CESSPAROV: I think you've actually heard some of my stuff. It's kind of Jack Johnson-ish. It's basically acoustic guitar and voice. Simple stuff. No screaming. (you may recall... http://bob.birdsallinteractive.com/ for a taste of some of my stuff).

MESHUGGAH: Glad I could help inspire greatness

AMBI: My sm58 always seemed really bright to me. and I actually don't use a pre-amp with that (it being dynamic and all), I usually just plug it straight in.

Robert, as I must shamefully admit-if you can believe it(!), still haven't
installed a MP3 program on my ancient Mac.
So you must be thinking of Chessrock instead.
Anyway...

If you think a SM58 is "bright", that seems to indicate that you're looking for
either "warm" or "neutral" sounding vocal mikes.
Is that right?

I was just telling the truth and giving you a tip on posting your subject titles. For example, IMO you'd get more replies if your subject title was something like "Rode NT1A/Studio Projects B1" or "Rode NT1A review wanted" instead of "RODE NT1-A Anniversary Model vs. Studio Projects B1", in other words... no "VS.". Do you understand? Anyway, I'm not angry... I was just telling you the truth and trying to help you.

I see a lot of comments here about the Rode NT-1, but has anyone actually used the NT-1A? Because I don't really think that it's fair to assume that the NT-1A has the same shortcomings as some of the NT-1's which people disliked. Afterall, there was at least some redesign, if not a complete overhaul...

I've only used an older NT-1, so I can't really offer any commentary. If you have a Guitar Center nearby, you can probably go check one out.

I like the X vs. Y threads. If someone doesn't like them, they don't have to read them. Isn't that simple?

i am going to go out on a limb here and say that you NEED a beyer m160.

buy one from musicans-gear.com

get it COD. it will cost somewhere around $350.

it is a good neutral vocal mic. (just use a pop filter and lay back a bit) and a good neutral guitar mic. and for that matter a good drum mic.

classy thing all around. good investment. if you dont like it you can get all your money back from selling it on ebay.

uuhh, didn't anyone else catch that? You guys are getting slow.

"AMBI: My sm58 always seemed really bright to me. and I actually don't use a pre-amp with that (it being dynamic and all), I usually just plug it straight in."

Hey robert, all mics need preamps. Dynamic don't need phantom power, but they need a preamp. And the SM58 is widely regarded as a dark or muddy mic. Well, maybe more muddy than dark, but still. Something isn't right here, put it through a preamp and see if that changes anything.

I caught it and that was the implication in my last post.
(2nd paragraph)

Yeah, I caught the bright 58 and the no pre crap... I was going to say something, but I just shook my head and said to myself... screw it. :D
