I was messing with my RODE NT-2000 and noticed when I set the pattern to an '8' it seems to be more sensitive on the back side than the front - is this normal? Anyone else experience this?

It's common enough with figure 8 mics that both sides are different although the manufacturer usually aims to get both sides the same.
I'd view it as a bonus depending on how I want to use the mic.
If the mic is a multi pattern though, I'd wonder if the pattern selector isn't out.
Try your mic in the Cardioid position and see if it has a typical hyper-cardioid tail.

Could be rare but the capsule could have been installed backwards.

I just got the mic (used) and plugged it in real quick before heading off to a gig so I have not done a thorough check. Its cardioid pattern matched what I expected to hear as did its omni pattern, The figure 8 pattern blocked out the sides as expected but the backside of the mic seemed more sensitive. I have not done any more testing other than this quick check with headphones. I'll mess with it more today when I get home. There was no significant difference in tone, just in sensitivity though I have not recorded the signals and compared them that way yet.

I had a NT1000 with the capsule backwards, I have another one with it the correct way round. The reason I said had, the NT1000 stopped working and Rode replaced the capsule under warranty, now it is the correct way round.

I think we are on to something here. The game is a foot!

I would expect that if the capsule was in backwards, the cardioid pattern would be backwards as well.

The microphone was made in OZ maybe it's upside down as well!!! :D

Come to think of it, yes if the capsule was back to front it should also be round the wrong way in cardioid. Why don't you drop a line to Rode Tech support there may be another reason, I have always found the Rode support helpful?
