RNP/RNC vs. Behringer DDX Pre and Compression

I have a Behringer DDX and I wonder if anyone here has tested the RNP/RNC combo against the Behringer Pre's and compression.

I bet the RNC compressor is better than Behringer's but, I'd like to know about the Pre's.

never heard the behringer but i'm positive the rnp will be a lot cleaner especially at extreme gains and quieter
 
Yes, The Behrinder DDX3216 Digital/Analog mixer with 16 IMP's (Invisible Mic Pre's) That' s what Behringer calls them...

The Question is: Is the FMR RNP a vastly better pre than the IMP's built into the DDX3216 mixer? Same question concerning the compressor.

I have a HD24 and DDX3216 setup and I just purchased a Soundcraft M8 for the pres and I'm about to get the Joemeek 3Q. I'll go direct into the HD24 from the Soundcraft M8 and 3Q and use the 3216 for digital mixing only.

For the money you get 8 very nice pres on the M8 w/ direct outs. The pres in the M8 are like the ones in the Soundcraft Ghost.
 
I've heard mix reviews on the DDX board. I almost bought one once and then got the TASCAM DM-24 instead.

An M8 is great idea no matter what though, 8 good preamps for under a grand is always a plus.

I must admit that Beh has upgraded somewhat, the quality of thier pre's on thier new line of mixers. They've increased (ever so slightly) the input sensitivity by +3/4 dbu's on the UB's & DDX from the poor-perf'ming pres on the MX line along with new circuitry. Mind you, this does not indicate that
Beh's mixers are now equipped with pre's you can take your recordings to the bank on, but Beh has seemingly realized that sacrificing quality to maintain low cost will hurt you in the end.

you will have to let me know how you like those pres in the m8 and how the digital out sounds on it. also whos got the best prices i might be interested in the smaller m4 mixer
 
I fully expect the stuff from Fmr. Audio and Joe Meek will kill any Behringer units. Their design thinking is way beyond "build to a price" and keep much better resale value to boot.

I have heard great comments about the RNC. However, I have also heard that because of the required unbalanced signal there is a substancial loss of sound quality. Other compressors such as the dbx's will keep the balanced signal all the way through, with no losses. Any thoughts?
 
The disadvantage to using an unbalanced line is picking up noise on a long run. I use a 6" patch cord between my RNC and RNP. Not a substantive issue in my case.

That woud be incorrect unless you were using really cheap 30' cables.
 
The M Series line from Soundcraft does not use the same preamps as the Ghost. I would say they are usable and decent - but I wouldnt say they are amazing.

Only with long cable runs.

Other compressors such as the dbx's will keep the balanced signal all the way through, with no losses. Any thoughts?

A cheap dbx might allow you to run a long cable without loss, but at the end of that long cable what comes out will still sound like crap because that's what the cheap dbx's sound like.
 
The RNP is substantially better than the Behringer pres. Clearer, more defined.

In the compressor arena, I like the DBX 160x over the RNC but I use both. The dbx can limit which is more usable for tracking.
