Hey Everyone,

I have learned so much from this board since i joined a week or so ago.

I am thinking about my next preamp purchase. I have a Presonus Bluetube which i plan on selling to help finance a better preamp. I want to this next preamp to be something i can use for a while.

Some people reccomended the DMP3, which costs about the same as what i paid for my blue tube. maybe even a little less. Will the sound quality really be that much different?

I have heard some good things about the Presonus MP20, which i have seen on ebay for $300. But since i joined people are also saying lotsa good stuff about the RNP, which has a $500 msrp.

I am recording mostly solo acoustic fingerstyle guitar. The thing that suprised me about the RNP was that it doesnt have XLR outs, only quarter inch outs.

Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions for preamps that are comparable to the MP 20 or the RNP let em know. Or if you prefer one of these units over the other i would like to hear why. LIke i said, i am intersted in getting a preamp that will be good for a long time.

Honestly, any of these three will do an excellent job. I can vouch for the DMP3. Blind listening to acoustic guitar MP3 clips I preferred it over the RNP. Now that I have the DMP3 I love it on acoustic and voice. People who own both the DMP3 and the RNP seem to like both a lot but prefer the RNP (maybe becaue they paid so much more for it). The MP20 is very nice, also. At $300 I would consider it. At $500 I think it is over priced when I consider what else is out there.

RNP

The RNP is a very good pre, it is among my favorite of the few I have.
The 1/4 outs are both balanced (same as an xlr) and unbalanced depending on what type of plug you use.
I would use th RNP for high headroom situations such as percussion / drums / and loud voice, over using the DMP-3.
The DMP-3 sounds great on many sources but doesn't seem to have the same ability to pinpoint a sound as exactly in a stereo mix field.
The RNP is better (in my opinion) for building lots of stacked tracks where you want definitive seperation.
That being said, right now you can get almost 8 channel of DMP-3 for the price of 2 channels of RNP!

i'm pretty sure they like it over the dmp3 is because when you stack tracks it doesn't sound like shit...

i've said it before, i wouldn't have any problem recording an entire song through my RNP, my DMP3 on the other hand will end up sounding muddy and some detail will be lost. but, ther have been individaul tracks that i liked the dmp3 better. unless my ears are blown out, i don't think that is just because i spent more on the RNP.
