Rnp gain... Im doing it wrong!

I am having trouble setting levels on my preamp. The manual for my Adat xt 20 says that the average level on the display should be at -15. When I play acoustic guitar, I have to crank the Rnp gain knob up to 54 (I believe mabey 56) in order to read -15 on the Adat. Even then the peaks that occour dont really come close to 0 on the adat meters. I am finger picking an acoustic guitar so the peaks dont increase drastically. I also read that one should come as close to 0 db as possible without clipping in order to resist noise. Is this correct? The preamp doesnt turn up much further.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using a condensor mic that needs phantom power?
That might be it...just a guess really....
I acheive -.001 DB on my final mixes...
I do it in CEP2.0 though...after I have mixed and eq-ed...
It's a software setting....ya know?

yes I am using condensor mics and the phantom power is on. I have to crank the gain way up to 54 db in order to get the meters on the adat to average -15. The problem is that the mics start to distort when the gain is cranked up that high. I am playing acoustic guitar and I just think that something is wrong with this situation.
 
Usually you want to get close to 0 without going over. Finger picking a guitar usually is a pretty quiet source compared to most. If you talk into the mic can you get a nice hot level? If not then something is wrong.

Are you using a good XLR- XLR cable on the mic? Does the ADAT have an input level selector for -10 or +4? How are you connecting the preamp to the ADAT?
 
Hmmm.. I'm no expert but a similar thing happened to me... switch mic cables. Then try a different mic. That way you can isolate the problem.
I'm not familiar with the rnp but does it have any switches like Hi Gain Switch like the DMP3 does?
One time that happened with me and it was that switch pushed in.
 
is the pre built in to the ADAT?
I agree with trying different cables and perhaps a dynamic mic to troubleshoot...
Does your mic use batteries or have any kind of switches on it (wild guess)?

ADATs don't have pre's, just the digital ins/outs, -10 unbalanced ins/outs on RCAs and the +4 balanced ins/outs on the ELCOs. Which input are you using?
 
I am going from preamp to unbalanced rca connectors in the adat. When I talk into the mic it produces a nice hot level. Its just strange to have to turn the preamp almoast all the way up to record guitar.
 
You should be able to drive the ADAT easily. Have you changed the cable between the preamp and the ADAT?
