RNMP? I think not. VMP2 Definitely so

the vmp-2 is something of a beast. I used it today and it was awesome. The sytek sounds smoother in the headphones but the vmp-2 sounds more fluid and huge. This is the best that my voice has ever sounded thru a pre. The sytek is smooth and clear but a bit small sounding. The vmp2 is huge and spicy.

It costs around $600 -700 for two channels which I believe is cheaper per channel than the rnmp, when it eventually comes out.

For those who are wondering how this beast sounds, I have some tests on Vox.

This was the 4033 into the vmp2 after about 1 hour and 15 minutes of warm up. The eq was switched off. I think it sounds more ballsy when the eq is switched off even though its not using all six tubes.

I used the blueberry on this one. I engaged the eq but left all settings on zero. Also, both tests had the 40 hz high pass on.

Did I mention that each channel has SIX tubes? thats like wow. And its true tube design not like the starved plate design of cheaper sounding units eg(tlaudio 5051-very blah sounding preamp)

Every vocal sample I hear through that preamp has something to it . . . I don't know what it is . . . like it's thicker, denser, and has more "substance" to it.

also more "in-your-face"

What impresses me the most is how it handles the esses.

THere is not a trace of harshness at all. THis is the first time I have experienced that.

Pretty smooth sounding. Did you use the wildcard on those songs?

I just got mine the other day and have only had time to use headphones and a 58 for a few minutes. Even listening that way, I couldn't believe how good it sounds. Nice and rich, with lots of balls.

my school server is down right now but should be back up today or tomorrow(hopefully)

I previously said that the vmp2 has 6 tubes per channel. Well, I am not sure now. It says it has 7 tube stages, but I it only mentions 4 tubes. I thought a tube stage had a tube in it. Well, I'll have to find a way to clarify that.

I've been asking this question all over the place . . . but does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get one, or do I just have to go to a Peavey dealer and have it special ordered?

I've listened to enough sound clips, and I can tell what they all have in common. The difference between a normal track and one recorded through one of these sounds kind of like the difference between being punched in the face with a bare fist, and one clenching a roll of quarters.

Looks like I'll have to put the word clock on hold. I'm getting one of these.

Thanks.

You have to buy (a new) one from a Peavey dealer. Peavey doesn't deal with catalog or web sellers. Kind of a pain, but it keeps the dealers happy.

chessrock,

the place to get them is on ebay. One usually shows up every two-three weeks. Ending price is no more than $700, but last week, I saw one with buy it now for $600. It went within five hours of posting.

If you see one, ask the seller if he will sell it to you for a set price. Sellers usually think the vmp2s are worth less than $600, so you might be able to get a good deal.

I've had 5 preamps, and this has been the best one by far. The high eq is the best I've heard and it is smooth as anything. I've also heard its the best bass D.I that you can buy.

And, if you are running with a delta card, a clock will make little improvement to your setup. I tried it.

Why would anyone pay $600-$700 for a used one when you can order one new for around $700? I like saving a few dollars as much as the next guy, but for that much money, I personally had no problem parting with just a little more in exchange for a brand new unit.

I don't get it... The subject.. How can somebody compare the VMP2 with a unit that hasn't even hit the shelves yet???

I believe that my server is back up now, hopefully not to go down again soon.

I re-uploaded the files with some changes, including letting the tubes warm up longer.

Top the blueberry file, I added 2 dbs of shelving boost at 10k, I also used the input pad and increased the gain. Somebody said it sounds better.

I did nothing to the 4033 except that I sang about 9 inches from the mic. The vmp still makes it sound big while retaining clarity

Vurt,
I know that they about 700-750 used, but you can never find them and the wait is excruciating. You can wait for months before getting it.

christiaan, I am not comparing the units, I'm just saying that there is no need to wait for the rnmp when you can get the vmp2 cheaper and I doubt that the rnmp can match the sound of this beast.

Who knows what they have up their sleeves. It may be nothing, it may be something that puts the beast back in its cage.I'd just like to say: Let the RNMP speak for itself. When it's there.

I don't understand what you mean here. I thought you encouraged buying used???

that should have said:

They are about $750 new, but I could not find a peavey dealer that had one or could get it in less than a month.

Shoot I had mine sitting in front of me 5 days after calling the local dealer!

vurt,

please give a name and phone number for that company so that guys can call if and when they want to get a peavey vmp-2.

what mics do you use it with?

I would recommend finding a local dealer if possible to avoid a hefty shipping charge, but if someone can't find one, I got mine from Absolute Music (937-878-0123).

I haven't been able to use mine yet, but I plan to use it mainly with a GTam52 and AT4033 for vocals. I think drum applications will sound good, too - 4033 out front and snare (57). I doubt if I'll run overheads through it (ECM8000s), but who knows?

Vurt- What I have heard most often is that the Peavey isnt "fast" enough with transients like for snare and kick, and is too soft, but excels at overheads. Just what I've heard, but I heard it on RAP at least 40 times, so... take it as you will... see what works.
