I owned an RME Fireface for a couple of months (decided that it was a gear lust purchase and sold it, now I'm back to the firepod). However, it was an amazing unit. Great conversion, really nice software routing, and more connectivity than I knew what to do with. You need to ask yourself this though.
- Am I getting very good results from the 1010?
- If you are, and you're wanting to spend some more money, I would maybe sink it into some better mics and pres. At a price tag of $1400, I was having to use
the Behringer ADA-8000 ADAT preamp because that was all I could afford to go with it. (On a side note, the ADA was probably one of the best Behringer pieces of gear I've used, but again, just a side note).
Now, that's not to say that you won't notice a difference with the Fireface. And, it being Firewire 800, it's more than ready for the future. Also, RME has always been known for their superior driver support. And it's also Firewire, so that could potentially make you more portable as well. My 2-cents is that if you're getting great results using the 1010, then I would stick with that and buy some better mics and pres. Plus, you've probably already invested in some preamps that are probably better than the stock pres on the Fireface (though you can bypass them, but you're still paying for it). The converters are top-notch, but it's all subtleties when you get to this point. And if you can keep business flowing on your current setup, why change. Watch out for the GearLust bug, it can bite HARD!!!!
