I have a chance to possibly upgrade. I already have the Delta 1010. It's PCI based....the Fireface is firewire. Is PCI faster than firewire? Is the difference negligable? How much better is the RME unit to justify the price tag of $1400? Would I be set for a long while if I got the RME? Or should I just keep the Delta?

What are you planning on doing that you can't do with the 1010?

You have really good monitors? Is your room treated?

I owned an RME Fireface for a couple of months (decided that it was a gear lust purchase and sold it, now I'm back to the firepod). However, it was an amazing unit. Great conversion, really nice software routing, and more connectivity than I knew what to do with. You need to ask yourself this though.

- Am I getting very good results from the 1010?
- If you are, and you're wanting to spend some more money, I would maybe sink it into some better mics and pres. At a price tag of $1400, I was having to use the Behringer ADA-8000 ADAT preamp because that was all I could afford to go with it. (On a side note, the ADA was probably one of the best Behringer pieces of gear I've used, but again, just a side note).

Now, that's not to say that you won't notice a difference with the Fireface. And, it being Firewire 800, it's more than ready for the future. Also, RME has always been known for their superior driver support. And it's also Firewire, so that could potentially make you more portable as well. My 2-cents is that if you're getting great results using the 1010, then I would stick with that and buy some better mics and pres. Plus, you've probably already invested in some preamps that are probably better than the stock pres on the Fireface (though you can bypass them, but you're still paying for it). The converters are top-notch, but it's all subtleties when you get to this point. And if you can keep business flowing on your current setup, why change. Watch out for the GearLust bug, it can bite HARD!!!!

Well the Fireface has 2 ADAT I/O, SPDIF optical, SPDIF coaxial, 8 balanced jack I/O, 4 xlr/jack ins, and Midi I/O. Read about it here

What am I planning on doing that I can't do with the Delta...well...they both really do the same thing. It's just that one probably has better converters than the other, I'm sure. Wouldn't that yield a better sound?

As for monitors...I'm looking into upgrading those as well and they will be done at the same time as the interface, if I even upgrade that...which is what I'm trying to figure out. Right now I have M-Audio BX8's...originals, not the new ones. Looking into Event Precision 8's or Mackie HR824's.

Also, room treatment is something in the near future as well. Looking to make my own bass traps out of OC 705. I found a place that can order it for me locally.

I've thought of everything! I think... :)

The delta 1010 doesn't have 2 ADAT I/O that's probably the main difference.

Take care of room treatments, theyll help more than upgrading some gear.

Yes, I know. And that's why I'm doing that too.
