I've been using M-Audio PCI cards (a Delta 66 synced with a Delta 1010LT) for a good while now, and I feel it's time for me to move up. I had been planning to save up for an RME Fireface 800, and then eventually a second one, but today I was looking at the Mackie Onyx 1200F. It doesn't cost much more than the Fireface, and I would get 12 Onyx preamps with it. I like the features, but the question is whether its converters would be of comparable quality to those in the Fireface. Given those two options, what would you choose?

I've never used either but the RME has a great reputation

Yeah, and Mackie has had all kinds of problems with drivers on the 400F, little brother to the 1200. Mackie took a very long time to deliver on 400F drivers...big red flag as far as I'm concerned.

RME without any question, solid company you can count on.

Did you actually see a 1200f in person? Because they've been "on delivery" from Mackie for about a year and a half now. The ship date keeps being pushed back every few weeks.

Anyways, the FF800 from RME will be loads better from anything from Mackie in several aspects. Converter quality, low latency performance, compatability with different systems; all the things that sets RME apart from the others. Ive yet to find an unhappy Fireface owner.

Thanks guys. I'll stick with my original decision to go with the Fireface.
