I heard today that Jimmy died. He was a good friend. We played many a gigs through Tx, La, and OK. He was a kind man that was happiest sitting behind his drum kit. He could swing a beat like mad and still play quiet. He was a drummers drummer. We did mainly low paying and often many miles to get there, gigs. He never complained of the money or small crowds. I was happy to see him give up his day job painting houses with Arthur Brown (fire fame) and move overseas where he was better appreciated. Black and brown painting was famous in Austin. When I met Jimmy he was spliting time playing with Brown Black and Blue /Manish Boys(Gary Primach on harp) and my band. Those long night drives were special. He would share stoiries of the grand days of the 60-70's rock scene.
This hit me pretty hard. We have stayed in touch over the years via email. He told me he had cancer a few years back. Recently a student walked in my high school special education classroom and said" I hear you knew Frank Zappa. Zappa is my hero!". I told him I knew Jimmy, not Frank. He was still all excited. He signed up as a classroom helper and I show him some guitar stuff. I was about to email Jimmy and see if he would mind exhanging a few words with this kid. Bummer. Now it has to go via a song. I did a few songs about Jimmy tonight. Here is the first one. It is solo harp with my feet on the drum pedals:
