Ok, so this is what I'm thinking:

I'm gonna get a set of 5.1 monitors for the studio. I'll have my main set(probably Behri Truth B2031A/P, haven't made up my mind yet), and i can reference of the L&R surround 1s, and then obviously mix in surround. I don't wanna spend a huge amount of money £500 max really...

For the long time I've been planning this studio, I've had my mind set on the LX4s. I won't be doing much surround mixing, and when i do, i feel that these will be adequate.

But now, I'm moving bedrooms, I'll have a whole lot more room, and i want a good set for my bedroom, for reference and movies etc. Are there any decent sets for bedroom use? I searched and searched, and found my way back to the LX4s. I don't wanna have them in both the studio(a shed, you'll read about it soon when we finish building it) and my bedroom, and was thinking. I'll buy them for the studio first, and use my shitty creatives in the bedroom, for now. And then when i find a good set, blue sky, genelec, reveals, or something, and save up some more cash, then I'll buy this good set, and use the lx4s in my bedroom.

The only problem. I don't think I'm gonna be using them that often in the studio, so i don't wanna waste my money. I also think the lx4s will be decent for what i need in the studio, so I'm thinking, I'll get a cheaper set for the bedroom. I really can find any cheap decent sets. Are there any you'd recommend that would be ok for referencing/occasional mixing? I hate the angled ones, and I have places i can put them that will be ear height. What about the Tannoy FX5.1s? Sorry for the unnecessary story/ramblings :P

Cheers

Lee

Wow, someone who works in surround. Why?

So that you can have different, smokin metal guitar solos coming out of the front two, back two, and center speakers.

Its like metal, only infinitely harder rockin.

bitchin.

I'd like to get a surround sound monitoring system going. How are you decoding the mix for monitoring?

To answer your question the Klipsch multimedia speakers are decent for cheapies.

I'm not really sure about decoding at the moment. I haven't really thought in detail about it. At the moment, i just wanna get the place finished, and think about what equipment I'm getting.

As far as i know, I can use a software decoder, 'cause I'll be using a pc as my dvd player.

And thanks for your suggestion. Do you mean these?

LOL, the first time you hear a great movie sound track in a great 5.1 home theater, you'll understand immediately.

Exactly. You you have any suggestions Ethan? Will i need a decoder if I'm using my pc?

If you have a surround capable sound card and the requisite loudspeakers and amps (or a receiver), you can play back surround sound DVDs fine. Even an old SB Live card can do this. But you'll need more if you intend to mix in surround.

I mix 5.1 surround on my living room home theater system. I have Sonar on a Dell laptop with a Firebox sound card. The six discrete outputs from my Firebox are routed to my receiver's analog inputs, and Sonar can send to any combination of those outputs.

Thanks Ethan. That's what i thought. I do have a SB card, but i really wanna get rid of it, haha. What do you mean by a surround capable sound card. Isn't almost any sound card with 6 individual outputs capable? Obviously some more than others. I'd love to get the firebox, but really i gotta keep all my money for my business(studio, pa hire, promotions, etc.), so i was thinking the ESI U46.

What do people think of the logitech speakers? They'll be quite shit for mixing, i know, but it'd be for very occasional referencing, and mostly watching DVDs, tv, etc. The ones I'm looking at(Logitech Z 5500) seem to have a decent response, 33Hz-20kHz, with a 10" sub and 3" satellites. Is there anything better in this price range(£0-£200, $404)?

Also, I'd love some critiques of my planned studio equipment. I've probably posted it before(a few times), but here goes:

Mics
2x Studio Projects B1
2x t.bone RB100
t.bone SCT-700
t.bone SC450 Stereoset
the t.bone DC500(shit i know. Probs won't use them much, and mostly for live sound) + 4x the t.bone SRM 1(drum clips)

preamps
FOCUSRITE OCTOPRE LE
RME QUADMIC
SPL GOLDMIKE
CPEQ-Box

AD/DA converter/interface
Echo Layla 3G

PC
ebay, AMD dual, 4gb ram, 2 internal HD, 1 external
Rack mount case

Software
Sonar Producers Edition 6

Control Surface
Behringer BCF2000

E-drums
Millenium MD70

Monitoring
behringer b2031a/p(not sure which yet) truth
M-Audio LX4 5.1 Surround-Set
2x the t.bone HD-990D
4x Behringer HPS 3000
BEHRINGER HA8000

Accessories
patchbay
cables
etc.

This will obviously expand with time and experience...

Is Sonar truly mixing in surround with 3D joystick panning or do you just fake it with busses? What is your final surround format on output, DVDAudio?

Thanks Ethan.
