ridiculous latency.

i've been looking for new music editing software lately, and i stumbled across mackie tracktion 2. i'm starting to like it, but the thing is the lowest latency i can record at is 20.4 milliseconds, which is enough to throw me off when i'm recording. i'm not sure why this is happening, considering i'm running a dual core processor and 2 gigs of ram. but i am also using onboard audio, which is called "realtek HD audio." i downloaded the newest drivers and everything, but i can't go below 20.4 milliseconds of latency without dropouts, clicking, and even crashing of tracktion 2. i also tried installing the asio4all driver, but that didn't help. can you guys help me out?

It likely has a lot to do with the "realcrap ...err realtek" audio.
If the ASIO4all didn't bring you much joy, you may need to pony up for a decent soundcard/interface.

alright. i'm thinking of getting a firebox. would the firebox be able to function as a soundcard in itself, or would i need a separate soundcard for playback?

While I don't have a Firebox, I would bet that it will act as the system "soundcard" provided the drivers are setup correctly.
I have a MOTU 828mkII and it certainly can.

well, check your buffer size, if you can.

I DO have a Firebox, and it functions very well as the soundcard for my entire system.

.

this is entirely opinion-based, but look for a soundcard that has good ASIO drivers as opposed to WDM. I have found that ASIO drivers are more stable and offer lower latency than WDM. again, that is just opinion but from my experience, the motu mkII is quite stable with ASIO drivers, and i didn't like t with WDM as much. just my 2 cents.

Latency Measuring?

Maybe a silly question but how can you tell how much latency you are experiencing? Just because I would like to find out how my system is doing.

P4 prescott 3.4/M-audio delta TDIF @256 samples = 6.5 mS

dont forget to mention,

256 samples is considered ideal tracking buffer size.

although, due to my poor memory, i often track at 512 samples, just becuase i forget to change it and that is default.

use 512-1024 samples for mixing, as higher latency doesnt require the computer to work as hard, so you can load it up with plugs!

advice: if its not broken, dont fix it. thats for T Sat.
