So here's another in a series of me adding rhythm sections to things.

My friend Brooks Williams (www.brookswilliams.com) is one of my teachers at The Swannanoa Gathering each year (Those who know me, know about this, long story, guitar camp www.swangathering.org).

Anyway, last year he played this great song he wrote called Rich Tonight, and I asked him to send me a scratch of his guitar and vocal for me to add the rest of a rhythm section to. He did, and I did. (the track he sent was a acoustic guitar and vox mixdown, I couldn't manipulate the parts.)

He asked me to keep it under wraps for a little while (I actually did this aroudn Halloween of 2007), because he was putting the song on his new CD ("The Time I Spend With You", it's fabulous, go buy it!!), and he didn't want anything out there till the CD was out in January. Well, it's out, so I can share this with you now.. My take turned out denser and more funk-oriented than his, which is more blues/rock, but there are many things I like about his studio version better than my take here (buy his CD if you wanna hear it! ;) ), and a few things I like better on my arrangement. Anyway, here it is. I added acoustic drums, bass, tambo, and electric guitar part (don't laugh too hard on that one...) and three backup vox parts...

Just a fun little exercise, nothing serious. I have never in 30 years of playing had a more fun 4:00 behind a drumset, though! (especially the last :90 or so)

Cool song and I like what you did with it a lot. It got my foot tappin' and head bobbin' which is pretty much how I judge most songs. I really like how the bass goes along with the guitar. The only thing I might work on is the electric guitar part.

Yeah, I sorta suck that way. :) I'm a bass player and drummer by trade... :)

Well the bass and drums are great. I don't think the performance in bad on the guitar, but I think you could write a more interesting part. But once again great song.
 
Your additions to the base tracks take this in a nice funky direction. The foundation was strong but the enhancements really lift it up to another level. Excellent mix and playing overall...

Jammin'. Very groovy. Definitely nice drumming. Great drummin'! The bass is very groovy. The song itself is pretty nice.

Thanks Chris... His final studio version with full band is cool; he used a resonator guitar on it; it was sorta the same feel as mine, only less dense, and a bit less funky; more organic...
 
cool...:)

i love the variety of cymbal sounds...the use of the ride especially. nice build-ups here and there. very expressive bass performance. the guitar sounds pretty good for a non-guitarist?

Thanks heat! Yeah, I have a bunch of cymbals, for exactly that reason, I love the different tonal colors. I have a Zildjian 21" splash with the rivets removed and inverted, as a China; much purer tonal quality than a real China Boy; a Bosphorus Antiq medium thin 14" crash, a 10" Zildjian splash, and a 14" Zildjian A medium thin crash, and Sabian 14" medium thin hats. Some of the crashes overwhelmed the diaphragms on the overheads; I've since moved them higher and that doesn't happen anymore. ( I smack em around pretty good, I guess...)

I appreciate your comments; the effect you describe is precisely what I was going for. I wish I were a better guitarist. I play decent rhythm, but no lead at all. I haven't gotten my head around the nuances of the guitar really; my bass player mentality gets in the way; I mute when I shouldn't and stuff like that.
 
Yeah listening to those tracks back to back you really rock a new groove to an already good tune... most importantly you add a lot to the tune without burying what he did. Bass is deep, drums are rocking, just a cool tune with a dancable groove :cool::D I'm no vox expert, the performance sounds great to me, but on my speakers they sound like they could somebow be in the mix even better... enjoyed this a lot guys, great job L :D
 
Nice little shuffle you've got going there, sir. Very groovy. Definitely a keeper. I like the concept for the song, great tagline.
