Thank you.

and the Beyer M160 is still made...probably could pick up this hypercardiod duddette for under $450 if you look around..or less maybe.

Ametth - you fortunate bastard! A Royer! What are you using it on? What's it sound like? Your public wants to know. Damn, you sure you're still a home recordist?

mixmkr - you probably know this, buy Beyer makes more ribbons than just the M 160. I like their 'studio applications' descriptions on their website. They recommend the M160 for 'stringed instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, dulcimers and zithers'. Way-hay! Finally! A reliable mic for tracking a zither! They recommend the M500 for acoustic guitar and vocals. I've asked them for prices. I'm guessing that the bigger the number on the mic, the more expensive it is.

"beyerdynamic currently makes 3 ribbon microphones, the M 130, M 160 and M 260.80.

M 130 $749
M 160 $749
M 260.80 $419"

Straight from the mouth of the horse.

Is $419 affordable? And more to the point, at less than half the price of an R-121, how good is it?

I wonder why the Beyer site lists mics they don't supply any more? What a misinformative site.

I love M260's--great drum overheads.
About 2 years ago was the all-time ribbon mic bargain at Full Compass...they had a bunch of the Beyer M500 limited edition reissues, which I think is a better mic than the old M500. It came in a cherry case, certificate of authenticity (woo-wooo!), the whole bit, for 177.00 if you bought 6 or more. (I think they were under 200 for one)...
These mics rule, IMHO, and at that price, it's a hard one to beat...
