Got my MXL 860 ribbon mic. I'm running it through an ART MPA Gold pre and a Pro VLA 2. On the pre I have the input impedance cranked all the way up to 3lk, the input gain at 2 o'clock, out put gain at 1 o'clock. Also have the +20 gain button pushed. I'm not very savvy with compressors, on the VLA the input threshold is at -5 the ratio a little less than 4:1 or 11 o'clock and the out put level at +5. The attack is at 7 o'clock or just above .25 ms the release is just below .3 ms or 8 o'clock. So far this is the setting I like, though I will keep on noodling.

Is there any "standard" setting I should try? Also the the 57 I'm running straight into my Tascam US 1800 with no compression. Should I be running it thru the MPA and the VLA? I will try it for myself tomorrow. I know it's subjective, but what say you?

Just for giggles ..... hit the input very hard with the compressor then you'll have to adjust with the make up volume.
It's a cool effect.
