"Rhythms" 2003 (New Recording)

as much as I like the wall of sound, this IS the best version...the naked one, that is. The vocals DO come across MUCH better. And the song seems to have more direction to it. Saving the keys until the little part around 3:00 was great. I also like the way the BG vocals were "grouped" together, kind of over on the right a tad. This one actually has more creativity in the production than the other version, imo.

btw, I'm not hearing any hiss... and the sm58 sounds great on the guitar. Who says it has to be a $200 condensor:eek: ...or even a $1500 one ...double:eek:

my previous post was written b/c dumbass here assumed that you would just update the file...so I now have TWO excellent copies of your latest synth version...LOL... And here I was thinking you were some kind of a magician for being able to upload 2 files with the EXACT SAME NAME @ NWR. Ok, enough about my stupidity...that's been covered in detail elsewhere.

Fuck, I hate agreeing with people when it comes to music...I mean it; it really goes against every bone in my body. "Chrysalis" was still my favorite recording of yours until about :20 minutes ago, b/c this is very very good. I've always loved the break @1:25, but it seems even bigger now. That is as powerful a section of music as I've heard in my life. I actually look forward to it every time I listen...wait for it...wait for it...BADA-BAM!!!

Only Two Crits - I haven't lost my mind completely I don't think...the harmonies off to the right starting @1:45 are still off. (if you want to try this new fangled gadget called "autotune," just let me know...I'm in tight with the company, and I can see that you're a man with an open mind, LOL)

The spoken part (you, right?) it needs "something" now that the drum fill is gone. I don't know what, LOL..A shaker, maybe? Something to maintain the continuity of the song, and I'm not talking about in a rhythmic sense...it sounded cool to me before, and now, it reminds me of an edit.

12 string

I think this would sound good played on a 12 string

yeah i dont remember this either??..

that intro guitar tone is pristine!
killer vocals ...yeah at 1:28....really cool..
man i dont want to type...im diggin just listening...cool drums at 2:35 ish....at 3:13 the high harmony that comes in ....DO THAT MORE...at 3:35 the low frequency is prety heavy...might be my winamp settings tho......

very cool

OK... that's better :D

Dude, that simply just rocks. Taking out the synths made this much more powerful.

"...come home with nothing" at about 1:26 is unfreaking believable. That is so powerful. I spend the whole rest of the song waitng for those three powerful hits again. But they never come. That's good. I'm left wanting to hear it again.

two thumbs up.

I burned this and listened 4 times in the car going to work and back. Haven't heard the naked mix yet since I'm on OSX tonite and there are no MOTU drivers yet for my soundcard, blah blah, blah.

Anyway, I bought this new Sonny Landreth CD and was listening to it on the way home, but I was not digging the mix on it too much. For kicks, I pop your tune in, and it sounds much clearer--much less BS going on. I really like the song--touches of Moody Blues, CSN and Dave Mattews mixed together. Yet, its YOUR style in the end.

Anyway, I do have a gripe. I have a very hard time picking out the lyrics in much of this and it really sucks to have something this good with what I'm sure are intelligent lyrics, yet have to strain constantly to get them. Nobody else mentioned it, so maybe its just me. If I had to transcribe what you are saying, I couldn't do it. Some lines come through clean--others don't. Beautiful singing and wonderful composition and mix as far as I'm concerned. Harmonies sound locked up and in tune. Placed right too.

My guess is that you know the song by heart, so its obvious to you know what you are singing. But I sure can't tell. There are places where you need to ride the fader or draw a volume line on the track to boost certain words or ends of phrases. I don't think that would adversely effect your mix either. You have a great voice. It deserves better than to be buried.

There were parts of this where I was sure you were singing in another language. :D OK, I'm out of your face now. I think its a great piece overall. Do you still love me? :D

The naked truth spurted out of my speakers (5 seconds at a time... damn buffering :))... and it stripped me, too. Raw feeling is always effective, and may be the best musical instrument any of us could wield.

And strange as it was, the pitch-shifted stuff sounded great... like your own personal chrisharris singing backup :D

Strange, but the hiss did seem to die down--possibly due to EQ changes, or psycho-acoustic whatsits. Maybe the build up of hiss was caused by some of the tracks you muted? Who cares about the damn hiss :)

(listening to dl'ed file)

After the guitar mix of "Chrysalis", I gave up trying to give you much mix feedback--you'd gotten so good. (tho... I AM hearing some low vocal-ness between 0:55 & 1:05 or so... but it's slight)

Great backups... love 'em lots. The doubling is most interesting around 2:00... not based on I, III, V at all... great.

(vocal boominess around 3:25? possible? proximity effect?)

Great song.

Al- Hey man, I value your opinion a lot, and I wonder if you wouldn't mind listening to the "practically naked mix" of Rhythms on NWR, and let me know if you still have trouble with the lyrics. After a few quite understandable complaints about that synth, I started muting tracks, and I remembered where I started. :)

Thanks a lot guys!!!

It's not a final mix now, still need some things, but I am going with the raw approach. You guys are so helpful, it's like being in a giant band sometimes...

Oh wait, since when are bandmates helpful? Well you guys are anyway....

:)

hehe! funny.. It's not that I don't have an open mind, it's just that all of my favorite music was done without that 'special effect', and that's why I don't think it's ever necessary unless you like vocals that sound like a synth. :)

yo Tom, the naked mix is really awesome! all the versions were great to me, so I'm no help here.. Each one had something I liked, but I guess I like the original vocal performance the best.. I think you know why..

Just got around to listening to this. Cool song. great singing. Nothing to suggest really.

Thanks Doug.

Since this got bumped up I should say that I've taken this song down for now. Thanks for all the suggestions. I feel good about them. Looks like Guernica will probably add some nice bass to it and I have a few changes to make myself.

Thanks again :)
