Rhyming dictionalry suggession please

is it worth it to try and start a discussion re: rhyming dictionaris.
I'm sure they've happened before, though.

I've just always felt that the rhyming dictionary detracts from the value of the song (here might lie a good discussion on what the actual value of a song is, and to whom it is more valuable :) .)
It makes it easier to write songs, sure, but I say that if a song is difficult to write - for whatever reason - then so be it. I don't go so far as to call it "cheating", but it does leave a bit of a blemish on the buffed product, and no amount of Silvo will ever get it off! What happened to "the challenge" and to honesty as a songwriter (particularly to yourself!)

I'm not sure if The Greats (whoever they may be) ever used rhyming dictionaries, but if they did, I'll bet that they would have managed without them!

(b.t.w., I don't own a rhyming dictionary. never have, and so I may me talking complete rubbish or out of turn.)
 
I think the dictionary just gives you leads, options, ideas...

I mean, how many words can u think of off the top of your head?They only taught me about 100 words at my highschool;)

By looking up astound in the dictionary, I came up with surround which then led me into jungles. Ok not the deepest song but you get the idea.

"Ancient ruins of Greece and Rome
I’ve been down paths of cobblestone, so holy
Beaches down in Mexico
Swiss Alps white from snow falling slowly "

Nothing else rhymes with holy by the way. Nothing i could put into this song (lowly,guacamole-hmm maybe " Beaches down in Mexico I chilled with my chips and guacamole!)


Anyways, true one CAN be limited by rhyming when they have to cut out a great line because they cant find a rhyme. I usually rework it.
So i'm for rhyming.

If you use a ryhming dictionary, do you change the direction of your lyrics just to be sure that your words ryhme?

Are all of those "moon june" songs really what the songwriter had in mind or is it writing for the sake of a convenient ryhming scheme?

I always thought that it was cruel satire when I would see a movie or tv show with someone writing a song and spouting off a bunch of words that ryhme, and shoe horning one into his song.

Not that some folks couldn't have benifited from such a crutch.

Lou Reed jumps immidiately to mind.

His solution is to either simply repeat the word as a homonym or force ryhmes with assonence.

Hmm
I moved to the big apple, new apt, new job, new hair color, sold my br8, bought a brand new computer, cakewalk,delta 66, mackie 12x12 and midi interface. So, you can say I've been busy. I HAVE been recording and selling songs. Just not posting. I actually had a big name Jewish singer buy and sing one of them at a concert for over 1000 people!
So I've been busy. But I'm back:)

I own a rhyming dictionary, but find I use a thesaurus more. When I'm looking for that certain word, it seems to work better for me to follow the thought I'm on than to just go looking for a rhyme. Sometimes I find a word that is a bit more precise in the meaning I'm after. And a new word can suggest new rhymes.
