Flailing up a storm.
I have an old es 335 knock off, and it looks and plays great, but sounds like kaka.
I picked up a set of classic 57 pickups and decided i would replace the pickups, and now i am thinking i might go ahead and replace all the electronics, what is in the is 30 years old and the wiring/soldering should be fairly easy and a good project.

So here is my question, what gauge wire and size of pot6s/caps etc would you use to do this?

I was planning on using this as a guide (the second diagram, standard gibson setup):

Thanks,

Side question here.
I unstrung the guitar, replaced the pickups at first with all the old components in place, and tried to test the pickups with and amp and got horrible hum, that went away when i touched ANY of the electronics.

I freaked out and figured somehting was not grounded, bad components etc. Then i was thiking about it this morning, and realized that the grounds may have all gone ot one of the bridge posts, and without strings, that left it ungrounded.

Could this be true, or are all the electronics suspect and could benefit from replcement? Now i am wondering if I should ut it back together, string it up and see if there is horrible hum or not.

Does it hum when you touch the bridge? If so, then you have a ground problem.

If you are using a standard Gibson style switch, I would suggest using THIS SEYMOUR DUNCAN DIAGRAM, as it is easier to read and translate to the switch in question.

The only other major thing I would suggest is to tie some fine string (dental floss works pretty well, though dental tape can be a bit too thick) around the shaft of the pots and switches, with the other end on the pot washers, so you can get the little fuckers (you'll know what I'm talking about if you don't use the string) back in place. You basically have to work through the holes for the pickups, and it can be a real pain to get things in place.

THanks Light, as usual, great advice! You are right about the string idea, it will be a necessity.

Thanks Daav

You're welcome.

I don't know about necessary, but the string around the pots is a very nice thing to be sure. Then again, they do without in the factory, so whose to say?
