Revox B77 pinch roller adjustment

I've done it enough times using the instructions on page 4-3.

Hello,

I am a newbie, not sure if I should introduce myself first somewhere, but here I am anyway. :)

Tim: where can I see page 4-3 of instructions? Are they downloadable from this site?

I am dealing with a non playing B77, if I push the roller against the tape it will sometimes run fine, others will stop, so I am assuming that's the problem.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Juan.

Before you start mucking around with the pinch roller mechanism, I'd check the roller itself. Make sure it's not dissolving or going sticky. There's a guy on ebay who sells replacements, and folks like Terry of Terry's Rubber Rollers who can re-coat them.

The service manual for the MK2 is here:
ftp://ftp.studer.ch/Public/Products/Revox/Revox_B77/Revox_B77_MkI-II_Serv.pdf (49MB!)

...sadly I never did fix my Revox, it does look like a problem with the solenoid. I needed a mastering deck so I bought a Studer. I still dig it out for flanging and other effects where the tape speed is not critical, though.

Hello,

Thanks for your prompt reply. The roller looks fine, no sticky surface or falling chips, will clean it anyway, but not sure how, maybe clean water only. Previous owner left a spare roller, will look for it and compare it with old one.

Regards,

Juan.

Hello again,

Thanks so much, I was reluctant but petrified dirt was causing the problem. Cleaned first with cotton cloth moistened in water then with Revox's head cleaning solution which, according to instructions, is useful for pinch roller as well.

Now it runs fine, but a new problem came up. Left channel is dull, much quieter than right, sound is "wobbly" don't know how to describe it but it is exactly like misaligned head in a cassette player.

Will start a new thread about that issue.

Thanks again.

Juan.
