We tracked this CD, but the band broke up before we could mix it. :(

Anyway, just a couple 1 hour mixes. Had a chance to finally get all the ADAT tapes transferred into the computer and had a couple hours to run some mixes.

What ya'll think?

Ed

the tracks and the mixing sound better than anything i'll ever be capable of, but if you're asking about the music. it honestly didn't do much for me.

I didnt care for "machine" but I loved "girlfriend".Both mixes sound Pro.........beyond most homereccers, but then again you're not just another homewrecker.LOL.The drums sound sweet on both tunes.Nice, tight playing.

I listened to Girlfriend. Didn't care for the song - poor writing I thought. Sometimes you wonder if people ever think when they're writing, or if they just say, "Yeah that fits," and shove the line in.

Now the mix was top notch. Great guitar tones. Nice reverbs on everything - especially the vocals. The vocal verb on the "all reruns" stuff around 2:20 were especially sweet. Performance of it was so-so. That lead break sounded awsome.

Something strange at 1:27 - some little hitch.

erichenryus, thanks for the comments about the engineering. But, don't underestimate what you might be capable of. Believe it or not, that was tracked on old 16 bit ADAT's using all ART preamps, SM-57's on guitars, snare, and toms, and AT 4033 for overheads and voice. Hardly gear considered "top of the line", even for the time (tracked about 4 years ago).

Kramer, thank you too. But this WAS tracked in the bands practice space, which was the "field hand's" little two room house on this property. Trust me, nothing special was done to the room at all except some carpet thrown up over everything! Again, the gear used, while there being enough of it to cover tracking a drum set and monitoring guitars and bass, was not considered to be very good stuff at the time!

These comments cause a little search, and I found some songs on Nowhere Radio, and I took a listen.

TripleM, you might want to possibly keep comments on the production. In all honesty, I could make the same comments about your music/songwriting!

But thanks for the nice comments about the production.

By the way, you are hearing a well placed delay on that part vocal part.

i was talking more about the wizardry than the wands employed. i'm gonna give a listen again when i'm at my monitors and ask you some specifics. when i listened the first time i was mostly impressed by how focused everything sounded, especially the drums.

Listened to both at work on cans. Sounds great to me. Very professional sounding.

Glad to be of so much help :p :D

Heh Jagular, these mixes need a lot of help in various ways! The band is only paying for one day of mixing, and with 15 songs, well, I got a little over an hour for the first one, then less than an hour per song after that!

I shared these mainly because I think they illustrate how good stuff can sound with focused tracking and competent playing.

I think overall, the singing is pretty weak. Often, when we tracked, I had to have different guys sing different parts than they were used to. It wasn't based on texture by any means, more who was ready to do the part well enough to spend the time tracking it. Musically speaking, I think the band adapted well, but we were pretty limited in source sounds. Same drum kit for the whole CD, same bass, same guitar amp. I did have a couple guitars to choose from, but we favored my old G&L S 500 for most of the rythem tracks. The lead guitar player used his Fernandez for leads.

Overall, I dont' think the band was as ready to record a CD as they thought. I was hired to produce, had that pulled away RIGHT before we started tracking, then given back to me after drums/bass were commited. They tried their hand at producing the guitars and vocals, and it didn't take them long to figure out that all of that was a mess. :(

I am relatively pleased though with how it all turned out. It was a challenge to deal with such a limited, and poor choice of gear, and to deal with the band's internal problems that goes with a band that is ready to break up.

Anyhoo....it was one of the last decent things I have tracked. Tight band with decent songs, and a commitment financially to do it well in the studio. None of the "CD in a weekend" crap that is prevelent now!

Heh...That's why I'm here to learn Ed. To hear a little about what you guys that know what your are doing think is wrong with things even when I can't pick it out. Of course some decent monitors would help, but they won't be coming along for awhile yet :D.

This does show me though how important good tracking is. Thanks for posting that. :)
