Ive been doing a great deal of research on what type of bass to buy to record and start a new band with on the internet, but on the way home from a night out with a girl, i decided to stop by the big ol Guitar Center downtown, and boy oh boy did it go well.
I played all the basses through the Fender Rumble 100 (1x15) amp which by the way is awesome.
1st off: ($250 at guitar center, $199 on musiciansfriend) Olp MM2 4 string bass. natural finish and flame maple body.
First thing i noticed was... heavy. Very very heavy. So pretty annoying already. Next thing i noticed was the pretty finish. Then i plugged it in and started playing a bit with a pick i stole off one of those Livewire straps. First note i started to play sounded pretty gross. All the strings were in tune n such but it was just fret buzz after fret buzz. From past basses i know theres supposed to be a little buzz, but this one was kinda taking away from my bass playing experience.
Then i started messing with the knobs, 2 volume and one tone. Nothing great really.
This surprised me the most because this was the bass i was looking to order from like musicians friend and i am glad i didnt. Overral in my opinion, suck.
Bass # 2 Gretsch electromatic junior bass.($250) At first i was hesitant because it was a junior bass with only 19 frets i believe but boy oh boy was it good. As soon as i plugged it in i started noticing the difference between the 2 basses. This one had rarely any rattleing. Another thing i noticed was that the pickup was hot. And when i mean hot, i mean HOT! The low strings were low, the high strings were high. It sounded like perfection through the Fender Rumble. This is part of the humbucker being where the 22nd fret would be, a natural hot spot for basses.
One of the things i also really loved was the neck on it. It was so smooth and worked out so well. Speaking of the neck, the frets were nice and close together. After noticing how beautiful it is and getting really into it, i started playing with the single volume and single tone knob. I was shocked at how the difference was between the tone knob compared to the OLP. They obviously put some effort into it.
All in all, i will be going to guitar center on saturday to bargain my way down for the gretsch and finally picking it up.
And in this experiment i learned not to really trust just the internet, actually go out and play it. It will make you a very happy customer.
Phew, the end.
