Review My Gear...gems or crap

I would upgrade your monitoring system and add an RNC comp and a Grace pre to your set up!

Let me ask you this; Are YOU satisfied with what you have?

Nice stuff, but where are your mics and mic pres? Doesn't a studio need mics? Are you just recording dance music or something?

I left the mic topic alone since you stated you have access to renting mics on the cheap, but it's always nice to have your OWN!

Your gear is at least to the level where if your sound sucks then it's you. ;)

It's good but not great. You certainly have enough of what you need to do some good work.

You are at the point where you should maybe stop buying for a while, use what you have to make some music, and the re-evaluate your gear and your approach to your studio. At that time you would decide whether to keep your studio the same or go with a different approach.

The studio hardware is all older generation stuff. There's good vintage and average vintage. I think in the future you may want to save up for some more updated gear, and/or a couple channels of great compressor, great eq, great reverb, etc. You only need a couple channels of each to really upgrade your studio sound.

Thanks

That all good advice, thanks.

I bought off a few family for friends for good a good price. I plan to upgrade and get better mics and EQ's/COMPS

Thanks for the advice

Hi, I am a newbie at this and have aquired a lot of gear.

Can you go throught my list and tell me if I have any Gems and or Crap

You should have some good mic pre's. The minimum probably is an Avalon M5 and a Great River. These are pretty afordable if you pester the guys at GC.
I got mine as demo units. Nice pre's.

I would get a new guitar amp. The Line 6 doesn't do it for me. Have you considered a vintage Fender? A vintage Marshall? A VOX AC30? A Matchless? Anything??

What eq/comps are you considering?

As far as compressors, I can't recommend the Empirical Labs Distressor highly enough. It's a great box, first class quality hardware and sound.
