hello people. has anyone ever heard that one "hit" by the band "the toadies"? i cant remember the title of the song, but the thing about it that i like is the reverse sound just before the words "make up your mind" wondering what effects were used on that goodluck

I had a local band come in to do a demo and that's one of the tunes they did. What I did to recreate that effect was I took the recorded vocal and ran it through an Alesis Midiverb II which has a reversed reverb (basiclly what that does is when it detects a signal it turns it all the way down and turns it up at a given amount which gives it that reversed tape sound) and recorded that to a new track. I then took that track and slide it backwards a bit and mixed it with the original dry track so the effected track started first. If you like I could post a snippet of it and see if that's what you had in mind.

that would be most excellent and helpful. thanks. i've got a new korg d1600 on the way here, and i'm trying to get as much info on different effects asi can absorb. i was also wondering if you, or anyone else has ever heard a song, or a band that used a vocoded vocal over a heavy rock tune(picture john bohnam drums, chunky guitars, etc). i know its a way overused effect at this particular time in music, but i'm a total sucker for its sound, and it would blow me away to hear an example of its use in a more ROCK oriented genre

I believe the song you are referring to is called "Possum Kingdom". I have achieved the reverse vocal effect using a non-linear reverb and setting the mix level where there is more of the affected vocal signal than the actual vocal signal. Tool uses the reverse vocal effect alot. Check out the song "Stinkfist" if you want to hear another example of it.

Reverse the vocal track and record a 100% wet track of reverb.

Reverse them again so the vocals are correct but the reverb you recorded is now reversed. The reverb will now occur before the vocal. Preverb.

Is there any way to do this with these tools: Adat, reverb, 4 track cassette?

4 track casettes are perfect. Just flip the tape around and record the Preverb to a spare track. When you flip the tape again you are all set.

4 track tape

Yes the 4 track flip trick works wonders for this type of effect. Its cool sounding on other instruments as well. Give it a try when you get some spare time.

Back when I used to record on the good old fostex cassette recorder, there were hardly any songs I DIDN'T flip the tape over at least once for some cool backwards guitar and a few satanic messages. Now that I'm all hi tech w/ hard disk, I can't find a way to do that stuff. IS THERE A WAY TO REVERSE AUDIO ON A DAW?

Hi Michael,

I've just done a couple of answers to this very question. Go to the Recording Techniques forum and read the Reverse Reverb article.

Regards,

John
