'just awful'?

Well, most of the time Cool isn't just awful. Most of the time it's okay. But not on this track, it isn't. No sirree.

I don't pirate, so if I decide to go for a better solution, it gets expensive. Damn. How important is this?

Important to me.

Sigh.

dobro - you've got Cool Edit Pro, right ?

There's a convolution reverb in there that I haven't used. But I have used SIR with some Lexicon91 impulses (noisevault.com) and that thing is very cool. It's VST so for the price of a VST adapter you get SIR (free) and impulses (free) that sound better than most plugins. I haven't heard Waves stuff so I don't know about it.

I didn't listen to you clip yet but I'd be surprised if SIR didn't straighten it out unless there's a piece of noise, distortion or some wierd phasing happening on the end there. If the guitar was played thru a processor with 'downward expansion' type NR then things might sound funny too - I'll give a listen tonight if I get out of night school early enough.

Not that post, the previous one....

That's a very metallic-sounding reverb patch... what 'verb unit is it? Reminds me of the early ART reverb units from the 80's....

By the way, thanks for the ideas about better verbs - Seifer (I understand now), groucho - I'll look into it.

You know, I realize that my recording and mixing knowledge aren't getting anywhere near the best sound that my gear is capable of, but still and all, I was listening to music in a friend's car last night and then in the bar, and what impressed me about those commercial mixes was the *clarity* compared to my stuff - every element of the mix clearly audible and sitting pretty in the mix. I know it's an old debate that's been kicked around here dozens of times - how much a good sound comes down to good gear and how much it comes down to studio knowhow - but I bet I could get a better sound with some better gear right now.

Thats right my friend, Super Impulse Reverb (SIR) is the best free reverb plugin. If you can't find the impulses you want, you can use the impulse modeler found at www.voxengo.com to create your own impulses based on your own geometric creations at just about any bit depth or sample rate. I've been using SIR with some custom impulses and Lexicons own Pantheon reverb, and I can't decide which one sounds better. SIR sounds that good (with good impulses). I can create a comparison of Pantheon vs. SIR if somebody can tell what type of guitar playing to do and what settings to use with both to get a fair comparison.

dobro,
I listened to your 'reverb tail' mp3 last night and agree with you. I think the track is just freaking out Cool Edit Pros reverb. I ran it thru the Lexicon Pantheon I got with Sonar3 and it sounded OK.

There is a lot of hum on that track though and due to the way the guitar is compressed the hum rides the sustain, which never really ramps down, till the next note. You may not hear that in a full mix though - I don't know if that's adding to the problem or not. It could just be that the cool edit reverb doesn't have the right density for the job.

I think it's the hum too.

Okay, I'll run noise reduction on it to get rid of the hum and then try the same reverb and report back...

Hi dobro,
I guess you have your guitar plugged in to an effects box that has a compressor/sustain setting ?

You could try running that into a direct box w/ground lift to get rid of the hum (unless you're micing an amp - different solution). Turn off ( or lessen) the compressor/sustain so the guitar notes have a faster and more natural sustain/release time (in terms of the overall ADSR shape, space between notes and note tails - release ramp). Try a different reverb in Cool Edit Pro - I can't get to audiomasters.org forum right now but maybe you remember Oz took a poll of how many of the full reverbs you could run on your system. are you using that reverb or the less dense track reverb?

If re-recording the guitar using one some of those things above doesn't fix it I'll stand in the corner for 20 minutes ! :)
