"lxp-1 vs waves rverb"

I used the same settings on the lxp-1 and the waves Rverb and thought I would post the results.

Vocals were done by singer g-child into an audio-technica 4033sm, singing an excerpt of Usher's "U got it bad"

the settings I could control

reverb time :2.93 seconds
size: 36 m
hi cut: 4.88 khz
bass: +2.50
predelay: 17 ms
diffusion: 71%
room algo: medium

feedback on the lxp- 1 was 0. there was no control for that on rverb. I tried to match the levels by ear cos when I matched them by meters, the rverb was too loud and too washy.

I used rverb because its by far the best reverb plugin I have.

first take, of course, was dry
second take was the rverb
and third was the lxp-1

All I did was paste the same vocal on three diff tracks set a 0 gain.

the lxp-1 goes for about $100 on the used market. See how it compares to the more expensive rverb, and then imagine how a $500- 1000 box would sound.

SO. Tell me which reverb you prefer and why.

Funk on!

Both sound OK to me, but I know how to make them 200% better.

Vocals were done by singer g-child...

Looks like the world is running short of "hip-hop" monikers.

They both sound good. The LXP has a little more low mid that beefed up the vocal a bit more on that take.

Hard to say which I prefer without a full mix but they both sound very usable.

I noticed a difference with the lxp. The vocal sounded slightly more up front, and the decay was a tad smoother.

Wasn't disappointed at all with the Rverb, though. Never have been. I suspect reverb plugins to catch up to hardware before long. The advantages are just too obvious (not having to leave the digital realm in order to appy, conveniece, etc.)

definitely,

software will soon catch up with hardware reverbs. The $100 reverbs that is.

It will be a heck of a long time before a plugin sounds as good as a top end box, because the seemingly infinite parameters on a hardware reverb will bog down many cpu's. Even with rverb, I never use it cos I can only send two tracks before asio starts freaking out. WIth a box, you hardly use any processing, thus freeing up processing for other tasks like Multiband compression(that one also kills my puter :) )

A plugin that sounds as good as a high end lexicon will likely cost as much. I'd rather have the 2u box. My rack is way too sparse. The resale value is also higher. I see people put used plugins for sale all the time, but nobody ever buys for the obvious reasons.

I've been considering getting some waves stuff but have held off because of the resale value. I sell $25k software for a living but even I squirm paying more than a few hundred for a disc. Plus with hardware you can use them live if you want to.

CJ- what recording software and speed of hardware do you have? If you can only get a couple verbs at a time than I definately dont want to spring for the plug ins.

To me the first sounds great, and the 2nd sounds cheapo...
