Resampling

does it do me any good to track stuff into my DAW at 48khz and then resample 44.1khz for my final cd output? i have been tracking at 24 bit 44.1khz. i know that when you change bit depths, you use dither, but what do you do when you change sample rates? it seems i would just loose the quality i was trying to gain in the first place...

I track at 24/44.1 to avoid that very preoblem.
 
if you record at 48khz. mix down (render) to 48khz, then resample using an anti aliasing filter, would you gain just a bit of high end resolution? i theory anyway.......

You can still retain some extra dynamics by recording at 24bit then dithering down to 16bit. There are no advantages to the higher sample rate after downsampling for the final product. The only real reason to record at higher sample rates is if you are going to be doing an analog mixdown or you want higher quality masters for future formats like DVD Audio.
 
But what about when you're layering multiple tracks, and/or applying DSP??? Seems to me that, in theory anyway, the resolution of a mixdown would be far greater, even if you just converted your waveforms that you recorded at 44Khz up to 88Khz just before mixdown. Then after mixdown (i.e. in mastering or pseudo-mastering) convert back down again.
 
also, you don't have to dither in order for there to be an advantage to recording at 24 bit. even if you're just truncating, there will be SOME advantage, albeit small, that comes from applying DSP and doing a mixdown at a higher bitrate.
