For a few years now, I've been using some grant money and philanthropist's to build up a halfway decent simulation of a recording studio in a high school's band practice room. Its a small K-12 district school...and a unique offering these kids would not otherwise have.

I have a PC with Sonar 3...a Direct Pro Aaardvark instrument plug-in peripheral. I teach guitar lessons one night a week...and help kids that want to learn something about recording. This is for many young teens a very cool big thing, but what is basic for them is yes, of course quite minimal for most musician's interests.

At any rate...I get a student once in awhile that is challenged physically, a special needs kid...that would like to take a crack at writing and singing a rap song or something. Hey...I'm a 70's-90's performer...rock, blues...so, what do I know about rap?

But...at any rate...I myself am not adept at using Sonar 3's drum stuff. I even have a pretty cool double disk set of acoustic drum sounds to loop in...but my regular day job is as an art teacher. I am at school late tonight getting grades for the first quarter finished.

So...time is not something I have a lot of...

With that in mind...and knowing how easily some kids are wowed and pleased...is there a very simple touch programmed unit with a bunch of presets. you know...dial up this...hit enter and voila...there's a rap beat with some keys playing, bass...

what about those Dr Rhythms by BOSS...do they do anything like that?

I could write up a proposal for our grant person to order something like that.

Its funny. Once in awhile I'll get a kid that wants to sing. No musicianship abilities whatever...and its like, "okay...so now what...am I suppose to supply a band for you?" They often don't get it at all...you know? Developing a talent...then putting vocals to it...

But...I appreciate any and all suggestions...thanks

I don't have a lot of experience with hardware things like that, but ezdrummer or even fruityloops would probably be a decent software solution.

Most kids with this sort of stuff, give them a tutorial and enough time and they will figure it out.

Daav.
