i think it is time to replace my tubes in my mic pre. what would anyone recomend? are there some better than others? what are prices of tubes?

What tubes does the pre use? The safest bet is to replace them with an exact replacement.

well, it is just an old art tube pre. i would assume they are 12ax tubes, i was hoping to put a little better tubes in them to see if it would make any difference in the sound. i am not too fond of them now. they were cool when i first got them, but i have since upgraded to focusrite pres. they are just collecting dust, so i thought i would try some expiriments with them....

I replaced a tube in a channel of my dual art mp, and the difference is negligible, imo. The replacement was an ElectroHarm 12AX. I hear others talk about how much better the sound of their art tube pres are since they switched tubes, but I just don't hear it. maybe I got the wrong tube. I don't use it much anyway, so who cares...
