replacing a VF-16 hard drive......

I turned on my Fostex VF-16 yesterday and was greeted with silence , ie no noise from the hard drive and a message that flashed No Drive.......No Disk...... So I assume the drive's screwed
which really ticks me off since I've only used the machine a few times in 3 years . Anyway.......A guy at Fostex UK told me I can replace the drive with a Western Digital WD200-EB , the only thing is......when I checked on the Fostex website it says that hardware modification is needed to fit this drive in the machine?
That could cover a lot of stuff and I don't want to go in and make things worse , so can anyone let me know what exactly is needed
to swap drives?.......I imagine a few of you must have done this at some point.

have you tried mucking with the leads that connect to the drive?

My VF80 did the same thing once, said it couldnt find the drive, and I took the back plate off and fiddled with the leads and it worked ok again after that.

I have a friend with a VF16 who has swapped the 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig one. I think it was a very easy operation. the machine recognised it and formatted it.

Thanks Tube , I wiggled and I jiggled those connections but the end result was the drive remains dead.......but it was worth a try

that is........ I can't register with that group because I'm already in this group ???...........I must be missing something there

I had the same thing happen to mine. Check out my post in this forum on the subject.

I slapped a Maxtor 40 GB drive in and it works perfectly. $124.00
 
Thanks Ginzoo , I checked out your post and now have much more info than I had before , giving me much more scope to screw
things up...........The sledgehammer has a certain appeal I have to admit but hopefully it won't come down to that.........:-)
