Metal dude
I own 2 107's, in a preamp test i did the other day i noticed a big differance between my two aphex 107, one was very dull sounding and allmost dirty sounding compared to the other. There is a 3 year manufacturing date differance between the two, i figure replaceing the toob would be a rather cheap and inexpensive start. The toob in the unit has no writing on it at all.
What would be a ideal replacement?

What should really be replaced in the Aphex 107 is the SSM-2017 opamp it uses. They have since been discontinued, supposedly to many rounds of cheers amongst the design/engineering community.

Burr-brown makes a drop-in replacement, the INA163. It's so new, that no one really has had a chance to test drive it to my knowlege. But it is noteworthy that burr-brown has a very good reputation, and that supposedly would be "very difficult to make one that sounds worse than the 2017." :D

THAT corp. is supposedly coming out with a 2017 replacement that will be even more ideal/superior. Soon, we might all be able to take our 2017 units and turn them in to good mic pres with a simple chip swap.

Just a little tip I got from an aquaintance I thought I'd pass along.

Im looking inside the 107 right now....i dont even now what an opamp looks like!@#$%^&*
And how much would this INA163 replacement cost?
If it requires sodering-fuck that im all set.
And would i need two? since its a 2 channel pre?

Ohh wait, i found a chip that says "PMI SSM2210P" w/some other # also on it.
MAYBE THATS IT? Its sodered in there.

My question still stands, what kind of replacement toob can i put in here??

You're looking for something that says "2017" somewhere. The 163 replacement you should be able to get for free if you call Texas Instruments and ask for a free sample.

It's possible that, even should you have to get someone to replace it for you, that you could wind up with a significantly better mic pre for a lot less $ $ $ than getting a new one.

Just a thought.

I didnt think the 107 actually had a tube. . i thought it was some sort of "emulation" (the Tubeessence thing). .
