is there anything that any of you know of that will replace a midi note, for say, a kick drum, with a wav sample, while changing the
wav's pitch to match that of the midi pitch?

the example i need this for is this,
midi bass drum sounds like shit, i would like to use another sample
I have, is there anything that will write rewrite it in wav format
using my new sample in place of the exiting midi note.

sorry if that is unclear, but any help would be rad.

midi isn't sound, it is simply note data.. you are just playing the synthesizer on your soundcard using midi..
The way you have to attack the problem is not to replace the midi data with wav data, (that is basically impossible anyway) but to trigger the samples via midi..

If you tell me what sequencer you use, i'll tell you the easiest way to get about this.

Why don't you just find the kick wave sound you like and paste it into the right places using the snapto function.

cheers

What you're looking for is a sampler. What software are you using? For instance in n-Track, I would download a VSTi sampler, and then set it up to trigger the proper wave files for specific MIDI notes.

Or you could just do up the drums in something like Fruity Loops and import them into your multitracker.

You can manually snap wave files to grids as John said...but doing an entire drum part that way might get frustrating real fast...especially when you get it all done and then decide you want to speed the song up by a few beats :)

Use Soundfonts

If your sound card supports soundfonts, that's the way to go. You can load up your card with commercial samples or your own sound font or .wav kick and play it through your controller like you would midi drums. The SB Live card with Emu samples is the BOMB...

I was going to suggest the same thing that Cool Breeze suggested.

SoundFonts are probably what you will want to use. But, you will need to do some research on SoundFonts.

:D

I'm with John Sayers.

I just use wave files (each on a spereate track) with the snap to function. If you do that you can and not combine the sections you can speed it up or slow it down as long as you do not stretch the audio when changing tempos. You just set the snap to grid to 16ths 32nds or what ever you need...... I do have a very lazy drummer as well that will come over when the job is done. I also feel you get a better live drum track when the music is all there.

Never let your drummer work as a tow truck driver.!!!! just set up and he gets a call!!! ARGGGGG!!
