Blick-um, blick-um...
How much would you charge if somebody wanted to rent your snare drum for a gig?

The snare in question is a Yamaha Absolute Custom Maple snare and it would cost around $300 to replace if something happened to it.

How much would you charge for a day? How much for a week?

Thanks, Rez

Whatever you felt wouldn't be a rip off but wouldn't be timewasting.

Just make sure you get some sort of insurance, like a $300 deposit which you can give back WHEN it comes back undamaged.

Maybe charge the price of two new heads + a little extra?

I'd say $40 a day, $120 a week, plus have a contract with the person that states...

Ia. ____________ shall be refered to as owner and ___________ name shall be refered to as client and ____________ shall be refered to as item(s)

IIa. Rental price indicated in article IIIc. must be paid in full at time of release.

IIb. If client damages or loses owners item(s), client must replace or repair item to quality when rented"

IIIa. client will supply consumable parts as stated in article IIIb.

IIIb. __ drum head

I would just take a deposit for the value of it, or at least make an agreement that he will replace it if he brakes anything on it.

But, then I would just lend it to him. Good karma, good for your rep. :)

I like Rami's response - but it really is a matter of how well you know the other drummer.

I have freely loaned an entire kit to someone I worked with (on my day job) - but I knew where he lived (and where he worked). I also knew he was a decent player who would not trash my gear.

If it was someone I did not know well enough to trust (and I don't trust many people) I would get a deposit up front for the replacement value of the snare. I would try to set the rental cost in proportion to the use. If the drummer is using it to practise (ie: no income) then $40 per day may be very steep. However, if the drummer is using it to make $100 per gig, then perhaps $40 is fair.

Personally I would either rent it out at a very low cost, or loan it out (for the value of Karma/good reputation). You never know when a good deed comes back as a recommendation for a gig, etc.

....

My response is based upon backlining as a business, the price is up to you.

Thanks guys. I figured $25-35 is a fair amount to charge.

I hear what the rest of you are saying about just lending the snare. Although there are many friends I would lend gear to, in this situation it's better to charge a small amount. they know I'm a struggling artist too, and it's like their way of helping out.

Thanks for the input. Cheers, Rez
