Removing inner mesh grille?

I have this AKG C2000B which i've had forever but almost never use anymore. I decided to take it apart and check out what's inside. I noticed there's a pretty heavy second layer of screen on the inside of the mesh cover. Also, there's a foam pad that was attached to the diaphragm area. I know that Okatava Mods likes remove the inner mesh, so i thought i'd try it out myself on this mic.

the fact that this mic is a SDC becomes more apparent once you remove the foam that covers the front of the diaphragm, because then you see it's a big rubber disc but the actual "microphone" part is half the size (sorry i don't know the exact names of the parts). i threw it back together and did some recording with it. the results were not really night & day improvement, but it definitely had a more open quality to it on vocals, with less need for EQ once recorded. one thing i didn't like about the mic on vocals was sort of a lack of high-end clarity. the junk i removed seemed to help with that aspect.

would it be a bad idea to try this kind of thing on some of my other (better) microphones? i'd like to think the inner mesh is there for a reason, but i use a pop-filter anyway. any thoughts?

Neumann U47's, 67's and 87's have an inner mesh. I certainly wouldn't tinker with those! There are certain cheaper mics that have headbasket issues that this might be beneficial with, but this varies from mic to mic.
