removing effects from vocals

I was trying different effects with vocals, and it seems that i've managed to layer a few--i'm trying to just remove all the effects and start fresh, but even though i used the shift-whatever, as instructed in the manual, it didn't seem to work. Anyone know how to remove the effects so i can start fresh?
