I'm trying to do a remix of an electronica song which has very pronounced 4/4 beats. I want to add my own drum parts to give it a different "groove". Is there a good way to significantly remove or de-emphasize the drum kicks while affecting the rest of the original track as little as possible?
I tried playing around with various compressor settings, but couldn't really make it work. Some pumping between the kicks and the rest of the music would be OK (maybe preferable) since I'll be adding a new drum track.
It seems to me what I need is a compressor with a separate threshold and "trigger". The trigger would be set high at say -3 dB so that it catches only the kicks. Trigger would then turn on and off a compressor with a low threshold and short attack and release. This way it would reduce the volume only when the kicks occur.
Anything like this exist? Any thoughts on how to do it?
I'm using Waves Native Gold Bundle.
Thanks,
