Remote Control of Sonar?

I want to simply start and stop Sonar in record mode from my drum room. Do these midi control surfaces do that? I guess I would need something that had LED indicators or a display so I could see what I/m doing.

Sorry for the uninformed sounding questions, but I'm a relative midiot...
 
Yes... most all control surfaces will do that... exactly what they're designed for...

If your drum room is close enough you might get by on the cheap with a wireless mouse and keyboard...

And if that isn't an option you could use a midi control pedal with MMC translation software to stop and start Sonar. Set up loop points and lay down a bunch of virtual tracks (I'm pretty sure Sonar will let you do this, but I haven't worked in Cakewalk for a while now.

So would the Behringer BCF2000 do what I need it to via a midi cable? Can I run midi 20' or so? Do I need a midi merger or something to use this and midi input? I plan on recording midi from my Yamaha digital drums and be able to control SOnar at the same time.
 
Yes, the BCF2000 will work nicely for this application...

Yes, you can run midi well over 20'.

And yes, a two channel midi merge box would work, but it may be money better spent on a midi patch bay that would give you more flexiblity (Increased I/O and routing), and room for growth.
 
Any keyboard that has a midi out can run Sonar via key bindings.

Go to options/keybindings and scroll down to transport.From there you can setup commands via your keyboard by assigning a "shift" key.
 
I just downloaded and installed VNC and it works perfectly for this. I have a wireless router in my studio, so I can use my laptop in my drum room now. Best part is the price!
 
Bluetooth Keyboard, cheap and easy.

Or, if you have an extra laptop, configure it for remote of your Sonar box. You can do this with Infra red or wireless network.
 
I bought a cordless keyboard and it works great with Sonar. You just need to know the keyboard commands (R for record, W for rewind etc. - - my current setup prevents me from seeing the monitor when I am in my isolation booth {i.e. other bedroom} ;) )

I also set up Sonar to automatically return to the current “Now” marker so that I just CTRL-Z when I want to undo my last take.

I was going to mention this, I just wanted to comment that I also use this method. I record mobile so when I'm recording someone who know nothing about the box and I have to record a part for them (this past weekend), I can run the box from behind the drums, in the "booth", or whatever else. Good to know someone else discovered the convenience of VNC. Nice job :cool:

We do this at our church for remote control of our Yamaha O2R96 digital soundboard. We have a cheap computer up by the console, and it keeps the console management software open all the time. If we need to change something, we just hit that machine with vnc and have at it. Works great since the console is up in the balcony ;)
