One Hit Wonder
http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/easylistening/dachay2tnr/

I'm looking for critiques of the song "The Girl in the Light." I've posted this song previously and based on comments received I've remixed it. I think this is the best I've done to date and I'll be interested in your opinions.

For info:
Recorded and Mixed in Sonar.
Mastered (?) in Wavelab
Mics = Shure SM57 and 58
Percussion = Electronic drum kit recorded as audio.
Bass = Tassman
Guitar = Accoustic 12 string
Soundcard = Delta 1010

Thanks

Very good! Excellent arrangement..very good sonicly..open and warm..I especially like the main chorus on how the song ends..

Just from a engineering standpoint the drum rolls cud come up a tad..and with more of a spread ..everything else is big open and they seem to not fit what is happening sonicly ..

And with the backing vocals on the main chorus...maybe wet them down a little to push them behind the lead...they seem to be jumping in front of him..or just bring the volume down a tad,then again this may have been the effect you were looking for.

Again...very good..these were just my opinions and if you didnt change a thing ..you would be just fine..

By the way..is the twelve string in stereo...?

Very inspiring!

Thanks for listening. I appreciate the feedback. I relistened to it and I think you are right about the drum fills. The volume should be raised. Not quite sure though what you mean about "more of a spread", could you elaborate?

The volume on the backing vocals in the bridge/ending was intentional. I thought they added some punch. I guess this one comes down to a matter of taste.

As for the guitar, here's the lowdown. It was recorded in stereo with two Shure SM57's. One was on a boom about head height directly over the guitar. The other was out in front about 18" pointed towards the bottom of the fretboard. (The stereo is not equal due to the two distances from the guitar.) I also doubled the track using an idea I got from this BBS. I eq'd one track very, very trebly, panned it to the left and set it at a low volume (this track, in fact, sounds quite horrible by itself, but gives a very nice airy tone when played back with the other track). The second track is panned left without eq and is at a higher volume.

So now, why did you ask??

Really nice, I checked that out plus Our Day will come, you got a great sound. Kudos

What I meant by more spread is in the stereo field itself. I am not able to listen to it right now..but from what I recall the fills only occupied a space of about say 10 oclock to 12 oclock maybe 1 at the most..

the other things you have going in the mix have more dynamic range..i think this is a 3 tom roll..so something like 1st tom..10 oclock...2nd tom 1oclock..3rd tom 4 oclock..something to that effect..

I asked about the 12 string because Ive been training myself these days to try and identify what is going on in mixes and I wasnt quite sure what I was hearing...i wasnt hearing much of a delay but I was hearing a difference I couldnt discern..and the EQ explains it..

Again, ...well done!

David, thanks for listening and for the kind words.

Elbenj - AHA! I see what you mean about the drums, and it makes a lot of sense. Since they were electronic, piped directly into the sound card there is actually no stereo field to them at all. However, I can certainly create one by using a panning envelope on the rolls. Great idea. I will give it a try.

Yes, no delay on the two guitar tracks. Just different eq. I didn't think delaying one track was necessary, as a 12-string has a pretty full sound to begin with.

Thanks again.

I seem to be doing that regularly tonight in here !! lol

you are most welcome .. Lana

I really liked this track. Seemed well mixed. If there were one thing I'd revisit, it would be the 12 string. Not that it sounds bad (it sounds pretty good), but I think it could be warmer and crisper (likely a tracking issue more than mixing). This is where a condenser mic would come in handy. I have been struggling with recording acoustic guitar with a sm57 and the I can only get to tolerable. Listen to GONZO's latest post for a great acoustic sound - I'm pretty sure he used a condenser mic. As mentioned, a stereo effect would help as well.

Excellent tune.

Very nice song! I am a sucker for easy listening, love songs. The vocals were smooth and nicely tuned togehter. Great mix.

Langley, thanks for the encouragement.

Psmith - also thanks. I'm sure you're right that a condenser would have helped the 12-string (and probably the vocals as well), but alas, we don't own one. It is next on my wish list - although I'm still up in the air about which one. This C1 is getting a lot of buzz, and for $199.00 it's in my price range. Just don't know whether to spring for that, or keep saving for something else. I must admit though that I'm a little surprised at the level of quality we're getting from the Shures. We originally bought these for live stuff, and just worked them into the studio once we started recording. For under $100 they are a great starter mic. We're also recording in a basement with no sound treatment, and I'm sure that is effecting things as well. The dynamic mics probably help with this issue since their proximity is quite limited.

Elbenj - I did a pan on the drum rolls and I'm loving it. They go from about 20% L to 30% R and roll across the speakers (I may have even overdid it, as I don't know of any kit that is that wide :) ). Don't know why I hadn't thought of it myself (probably cause I'm not a drummer), but you were right on. Thanks.

I love it!

Dachay2tnr,

Both tracks are great. Harmonies are really tight and the
overall feel is light and sunny. Ever heard of a track called
"Elusive Butterfly"? Check it out. With the harmonic capability
that could be a wonderful cover. In fact, there is a lot of material
that is open to your unique style. But don't leave out any of your
originals.

BTW- my wife Judy loves "the Girl in the Light"

Kudos and bests!

holy s%&t, Elusive Butterfly

You might wake up some morning, to the sound of something moving past your window in the wind...

You must be as old as me, faithman! :) Great song, IMHO. One of my all time favorites. Was it Bob Lynn or something??

Thanks for positive feedback, and tell Judy she has great taste. :)
