hey guys i just released a track on a label signed contract that says they own they rights blabla, but is it possible to slightly change the name of the track and be able to release it on another label as well?
thnks

I bet you can change a lot more than that and still get sued.

lol, thnks mate, just asking cause read in the contract something about releasing something with same title..guess not legal n no dont want to get sued :)

IANaLb...

It all depends on what your contract says and what rights you signed away.

I think I've seen bands record a song multiple times on multiple labels, but I suspect that's going from a smaller label to a larger (where the larger label has a lot more clout to dictate terms).

I would assume that there's no way that you're going to be able to release the same recording on a new label unless the new label buys the rights from the old entirely.

Again, it depends on what your contract says. If you think there's a remote chance you'll get sued, contact a REAL lawyer.

In VHS's example, most likely the smaller label is associated with the larger label and the rights are passed on when the bamd switches to the larger label. There's a term for that relationship between independent labels and major labels. Just can't remember what it's called.

For the OP, you have to carefully scrutinize your contract. Read the whole story with John Fogerty and Fantasy records. They sued him for plaguerizing himself. He eventually won the suit, but he had deep pockets to foot the court costs. Do you?
