I was wondering if it was feasible to send just a neck to be refretted. I've had a few quotes here in Tokyo and it's expensive and would consider doing it overseas if it can be done cheaper and the whole guitar doesn't need to be shipped.

Light? Anyone?

The neck is maple.

With a maple fingerboard, you are usually best off just buying a new neck. In my shop, you would probably be looking at a minimum of around $500. You can get a finished neck from Warmoth or USA Custom for about half of that. And we, at least, would prefer to have the whole guitar so we can set it up properly when we are done.

That being said, if you are concerned about keeping the Fender logo on your peghead, you would have to get it refreted. Fender no longer sells accessory necks, and they have MOSTLY discontinued the sale of courtesy necks.

It's not the "honest" thing to do, but if you buy a warmoth neck you can order it unfinished. Have it shipped to you, and buy a fender decal off of ebay..... I recently sold a strat neck that this was done to. (I sold it as a warmoth with fender decal, so I was honest about it). As far as being on the stage, nobody and I mean not even my guitar buddy's new it was a warmoth neck.

If you ever sell it, it'd hurt the value a little though. (Unless you were dishonest about it, and I really don't recomend that).

Warmoth is liceansed by fender, and I've personally ordered a couple things from them. (Mainly jazzmasters). And I've always been really impressed with their products. My only gripe is that their finishing prices are WAY over the top.

There's a lot of people that will do a finish job for cheaper than they will. And usually cheaper than a "refinish" would cost. (Because it's less work).

Hope this helps. :D

Being a Fender Warranty center, I certainly can not recomend doing this.

Also, no one with any business relationship with Fender CAN do this without opening themselves up to a very serious law suit.

On another topic, I've heard it's not a bad idea to replace the saddle of say a Taylor 110 (my guitar) with a bone saddle. Slight improvements in the tone I have heard. Anyone know if this is true or a myth?

Thanks Light, MA. I've always felt like I'd prefer a rosewood neck as a matter of fact, and your comments suggest to me that perhaps it's time for a change!

PM to Light.

Regarding the Tele neck, etc., I sent a PM.

I've fit a bone saddle on every acoustic I've ever owned. The difference ranged from small to dramatic, depending on how well the stock saddle was fit. Many of them fit poorly, and that's where you'll get the greatest benefit to swapping.

That's good to know, thanks, I'll go ahead with it then

Light, you just depressed me. I just recently came to the conclusion that my 71 Tele needs to be refretted badly. I had no idea that the maple finferboard was going to be that big of an issue.

Yeah, they are a real pain in the behind.

But of course, if you want that sound ...
