I was thinking Dr Dre chronic 2001 is a great sounding cd
and maybe NWA'S Niggaz4life

Carpenters. Dats a good one !!! LOL

What kind of Hip hop do you do?

it really depends on this in regards to what you may use as a Hip Hop reference.

KRS One----- I got Next
Digable Planets----- Reachin'...

I use

SoundBombing II
The SCORE by the Fugees (<--that one especially)
And Most anything by Dj Hi-Tek. esp reflection Eternal.

I disagree w/ NWa.. tho Cronic'01 has pretty good Production quality.

But I STRONGLY feel that Hip Hop production-quality has only recently come into its own.. with High depth sapling and all...so Modern records for me. Though certainly there is a lot to be learned from the classics Artistically!

Dr Dre - The Chronic (the first one)
Wu-Tang Clan - Wu Tang Forever

Wu Tang ? LOL They did come a long way from 36 chambers in regards to sound quality.

Thats one of my favorite groups,, but before Bobby went Digital,, Those tracks sounded like the were recorded in a tunnel.

Of course you know Rza did that on purpose. He calls it his Grimmie sound.

yea but 36 chambes is actually semi decent, and their new stuff is trash. Like dre, his stuff is trash. But i guess you're talking about sound quality. Too bad the mainstream shit that had good sound quality can't even compare slightly to the good underground stuff that is bad quality.

Ok trash is a strong word i apaulogize to anyone i offended in advance. I guess what i'm getting at is you're basing too much importance on the things that don't matter. It's the content! Sound quality isn't going to make your music better, or make anyone like it anymore. Or at least anyone who's opinion matters. Some of my favorite songs sound like they were recorded with a radio shack mic, and then played through a shitty boom box with all the eq messed up, and then someone held the radio shack mic infront of the boom box and re-recorded it. If i heard a better quality mix i'd probably like it less.

Wu-tang's 36 hambers quality is decent for that stage in hip hop, in the early 90's quality wasnt a major issue

Wu-tang Forever, BIG DIEFFERENCE in quality , better mastering also

with Dre quality is always a must , forget about the music, as long as it SOUNDS good he's happy

I agree,, content is the main focus,, but the original poster wanted to know about reference CD's for Hip Hop. To me,, When I see reference CD,, I think a CD that will be used to compare your mix or mastering to. But,, if your looking for that Grimmie sound like 36 chambers to compare to you mix or mastering for today,, then YES,,, use it.

If you want that early 90s sound,, try Outkast's Southerplayaristic
Not so much the quality,, but the mixing. Pans , levels etc.
