I'm so sorry.
Recently ran across a couple of old Roberts 1/4 reel machines. Each of them have two channels of input module driven by about six tubes that each sound incredibly good. I'm gonna look into possibly having someone make power supplies for them so they can possibly be taken out and made rack mount. Has anyone had any experience finding anything decent in the way of mic pre's in old tape machines and the like? Are there substantial differences in tube brands and types and age? Where's a good on line spot where I might be able to learn about some of this stuff?

Electrical Audio has eight pres made from Ampex 350 series tape machines (see here). You could try contacting their in-house tech, Greg, and asking him for some help. Also, that description page contains a link to discussion regarding them on their forum.
