I have posted these before but I would maybe like to see some new thoughts, or any new feedback. We are recording our full length debut CD right now. This is our first thing we ever recorded though. Our lil' Redwater EP.

I am the guitar player/songwriter/recording/mixing/engineer dude. Haha.

This is some fine old rock 'n' roll. You know, the kind you where you sort your stash on the sleeve, the kind that begins with the hiss of a beer can opening and ends with you coughing up a lungful of Einstein's Theorem, Acapulco Dawn or some named hydroponic horticulture. This EP offers a fine handshake for Buffalo, NY's Redwater, that grips you harder as it goes. As unassumingly welcoming as "Holding Onto Home" is, by the second cut of this four-tracker, "Yet Another Girl," they've dialed the amps up and brought in a dumptruck of sweet fuzz. They add some James Gang funk to "The Message" but keep the attack hard, unsentimental, lean. There's not an ounce of fat on Redwater, and closer "Good & Bad" suggests their ear for the hard stuff extends into Ozzy's '80s work, though the Hendrix-y guitar splashes keep things happily in the red and the whispered, machine-like backing vocals keep it from being nostalgia. This quartet is currently working on their full-length debut, and if they keep up what this glimpse suggests it's gonna be a fun one.

Sounds great. Congrats on the review. Love the guitar fuzz. The drums are awesome and the bass is tight. Some really good energy here...

I hesitate to make mix comments based on myspace's sketchy player. I can't trust what I hear, but this sounds pretty good compared to what little I have heard on that site. Sorry I'm not much help, but you deserved a response...

Listening to Good and Bad now...

I like the edginess of it.

I think the bass is a bit overblown, just a touch.

And I like the vocals, but maybe with a bit less reverb?

So, when you burn test mixes on CD's, what are your methods for testing them out? Playing them in cars, surround sound, etc???

LOL. Oh the number of times my neighbors have driven by and seen 3 or 4 of us sitting in my car, listening to music. Yeah, all the time. I think the car is a great test bed. We listen loud. We listen soft. Try to get an idea of how it all sounds from different levels. We also have tested by sitting on the singer's deck with his kids $40 boom box. Gives you good perspective.
 
Nice! Been there, done that, man! Sounds like we test the same way.

I listen on computer speakers, my surround sound, lil' boombox, car, etc.
