OK how do you get those damn Soundcloud player thingys to work?

On the write post screen there's a little Soundcloud icon above the text box (on the far right, not on the quick reply box, on the full reply/write post screen). It just puts soundcloud tags around a link.

I don't see that, but I'm probably looking in the wrong spot. Anyway I just took out the iframe and left in the link to my SoundCloud page. You can play or download the song from there.

I remember this one. Are those still the old drum tracks? They sound better than I remember, but you've got some weirdness in the overheads and/or tom tracks. Sounds like a less-than-optimal use of compression, or excessive snare track bleed. Wrong compression kills overheads and can make toms sound funny. Too much snare bleed also makes the overheads sound funny. The snare itself has pretty good presence for the song though. A little more snare would be okay with me. I'm not getting much separation between the kick and bass. The kick occasionally pops out, but not often. The guitars and bass seem a little better and more toneful than I remember. I think they were kind of fizzy before? Vocals sound great. Overall it's better than I remember it being.

Steem - thanks. That fixed it.

Greg. Thanks for the input on the drums. I'll see what I can do about them. I don't think there's any compression on the overheads. But there may be some bleed on that snare that I can get rid of. Could you give me some further thoughts on the main rhythm guitar sound? What would you change - either in tracking or mixing?

Hey Trip - I totally remember this tune.

The vocals sound better to me now...clearer...did you cut back on some effects or doubling during the verses?

I think the drums are a little odd sounding, but not bad. I think I remember you saying you had received a stereo track from someone else for this, so your options were limited?

Forgive me if off in my comparisons, as it was a little while ago now. Overall, this mix sounds better than what I remember. The tune itself is fun and catchy. I like it.

Listening again....I think the rhythms sound pretty good actually. What would I change? Um, probably not much. I like the crunchy tone. I'd maybe like em a little brighter either from careful EQ or mic placement. Maybe make em a hair louder in the mix. But overall I'd say the rhythms are pretty damn good for the song.

heat - yeah the reverb on the vocals is different. It's "smaller" and dryer than before. I also took out a delay I had on them.

Greg - thanks as always for your help. I took a listen to the drums last night. I *did* have some light compression on the OH's. It wasn't doing much so I just took it off. I also noticed that I didn't have the toms gated, so I did that. I also gated the snare a little "harder" - hitting it so there is complete silence between the beats. I compared that mix with the one you've heard. There *might* be a little difference, but I'm not sure. I can't tell if I'm really hearing a difference, or I'm just *wanting* to hear a difference.

Thanks for the guitar comments. When I was listening last night, I also thought it was a bit soft. I'm also going to make a slight EQ change to the upper mids.

I'll post a remix of all this as soon as I can.

There is a new version at the top.

I gated the toms and snare fully. I took the compression off of the overheads. To my ear it made a slight improvement. But very slight. A little less swishy. But there are sections where it's still not great.

I EQ'd the guitar differently. I think it has a smoother top end. It's turned up slightly in the mix.

THere is a better balance between the bass and the kick.

Please comment.

Yeah I think it's definitely better. The drums and guitars are better. I'd still like more kick though.

thanks again Greg. In the future I'm going to do a Greg mix. It'll have the kick up 8dbs. :)

I like it Trip!!! On my system the guitars and vocals are separated so there is no trouble hearing them but I would bring the vocals up just a tad. Seem to sit a little low in the mix to me. They sound GOOD, just a little low

Yea I remember this one too. Everything is well balanced in the mix. The drums have a certain crispness to them that's tending to slight harshness in the upper reaches. Mind you I can't hear much past 13KHz anymore so it's probably just my eardrums flapping of their own accord

GuitarLegend - thanks for the listen. I think I agree with you on the vocals.

Bullsy - there is some swishiness to the cymbals that I just can't get rid of. I'm not sure what it is. It's not phase. If I invert the phase of one of the overheads, the low end goes away and it gets that "hollow, out of phase" sound to it. I don't know of anything I can do. thanks for the listen.

Having one or both of the overheads on the same plane as a cymbal or all of the cymbals can create that swirly sound.

That could easily be the case. I wasn't there for the tracking of the drums.
