Recycled denim as a sound proofing agent?

I was watching HGTV and saw that a company is using old denim jeans and recycling them to make insulation. They mentioned it could be used as a sound "deadener". Do you see any problems in using this type of insulation for isolation uses? Would it also be effective as a bass trap? Here's the manufacturer website: www.bondedlogic.com

What's the general concensus?

Chris,

I've seen that material and I personally wouldn't use it. The sample I had claimed to be fire retardent, and I guess it was, but it still burned and smoldered easily when I held a match under it. And (I think) it costs more than fiberglass, so why bother?

I don't know. I just wondered if it would work acoustically. I hadn't gave much thought to flame retardancy since the show said it was "mixed with flame retardant material"

Cost is nearly a dollor a sq. ft. That's kind of expensive, I guess, considering the alternative. Just curious.

Chris,

Well, for that you look at the manufacturer's data of absorption versus frequency. Any product or material that claims acoustic absorption but doesn't have data to back it up is probably suspect.
