Recording with two microphones

I have read it's good to mic a guitar amp with two mics say a Shure 57 close in with maybe a condensor mic a bit further out catching more of the 'room' My question is, if I add the two mics into my audio interface I will have recorded two slightly different guitar sounds left and right. So when playing back the guitar piece, do you think the different mic sounds will be obvious in the final mix?

within the guitar's own 'stereo field', yes...(ie.panned one mic type left and the other type right), you'd notice the difference...but you may well be 'blending' the 2 tracks together, in which case this would simply become your summed 'tone', and no one but yourself would necessarily know that you used two types of mic.

There is also a potential issue of 'phasing' , or that 'strange' sound you 'can' get when you record one source with 2 mics...experimentation with mic placements could be your best friend here.

The slightly 'different sounds' you are speaking of may well be perfect for you, maybe not....it's a very subjective arguement!!

umm...so therefore...err....GO FOR IT MOFO!!...and get yourself a sound...your own sound!!

Cheers for that, I'll buy another mic tomorrow and start recording.

Using 2 diff mics can definitely yield a fatter sound, if done right (in phase). I personally think the SM57 sounds a bit on the sharp / cold side, a condensor should add some warmth to it. In the end, the result all depends on how you mix it of course, but sure it can be hugely obvious.
