ok I recently just purchased a adat studio pack and to lay down some basic tracks i need to use 6 chanles for drums and one for guitar, now i need to record both at the same time. and after im done with that i need to free up more space for bass and vocals, my problem is i dont want to bounce them down all on the same track i want to keep the drums and guitar on a seperat track how should i do this.

Since you only have one track left, I am assuming that you want to bounce only the drums down to that single track. (I would recommend that you cut back to five tracks on the drums so that you will have two tracks remaining. That way you can at least mix the drums down in stereo.)

Only on the tracks that you want to bounce press the CHAN/MON reverse button to its down position. Make sure that the guitar channel is not pressed this keeps it out of the mix.

If all else fails look on page 63 of the Studio 24 manual. If you don't have the manual, respond back and I will give you the gory details.

I hope that this helps. It has been a while since I used the Studio 24. About a year ago, I upgraded to a Mackie 32-8, and 24 tracks of ADAT, but everything I learned on the Studio 24 works basically the same.

I'd submix the toms and cymbals together and only take up 4 tracks on the ADAT to begin with. Just get good relative levels of each and this should work pretty well.

Bounce Kick and snare to track 8...

TRY THIS:
Bounce Kick and snare to track 8 (Since they should be centered in the mix any way... just get a good balance of the two.)

Then bounce the remaining 4 drum tracks to the two tracks (stereo) where the kick and snare tracks used to be.

You will end up with a nice stereo mix of the kit and separate kick and snare track. (You will still have a small amount of flexibility in mixing the snare and kick, by using your EQ section. High mids will effect the snare and the lows will boost or cut the kick drum)

This gives you three tracks of drums, one guitar track and four remaining to add Bass etc.
